I have everything ready to submit the paperwork for the k-1 but my parents cannot find my original birth certificate for some reason. I have one but its not my original. It does have the raised seal and it is real but it doesnt have a whole lot of info on it. Just where i was born, when and who my parents are. Can I use that or it wont work???

Possibly yes, if it is an official document. You can also copy all pages of your passport as proof of citizenship or you can order a new copy of the birth certificate. It is something you should have and now would be a good time to do it.

Usually, the "real", "original" birth certificate is only kept at the hospital or civil records in the town you were born - they're never given out. Instead, certified copies are available by request. If what you have has a raised seal it's likely a certified copy. It may be possible to request a long version and a short version (in Canada, anyway), and it's the longer version you'd want for this purpose.

But like Gary and Alla said, copies of your passport count just as well for the I129f.

haha, good one Steve!

You need an original or certified copy. If you dont have one you can order yours, google how to order one, basically you go to your state's govt website (state you were born) and you can order it online, each state is diff but I think NY was around $50. Interviewer WILL ask for original & copy and will keep the copy.

Or in my case they kept my original! It was my actual original one and I had never needed to order a copy but I guess now I do. As I understand it you need the long version with the raised seal.
