Filing taxes with a pending AOS case seems a bit complicated.....My husband received his EAD card in the mail yesterday. Great news! He went and applied for a social security number today and looks like they are processing it and will get him a card within 6 weeks. The problem.....I am filing taxes and need a social security number to put in that box. I know with ITIN number, it's only valid if you aren't eligible for a social security number. Am I right to assume that once he received his EAD card he was eligible for a social and now that he has a social in production he cannot get the ITIN number? I've tried to get a hold of the IRS but after 50 mins on hold I just gave up! So really unsure of how to go forward. Would the social security offices give you your number if you needed that before the actual card? I also don't know how long it takes them to assign numbers, I imagine it's pretty automatic.

you can get a extension on fileing your taxes late so you don't get a late penalty, then you can wait for your social sercurity card, for your taxes,or if you get the itin number you can use that also. but when your ss card arrives you must call the irs to cancel the itin number ,the number for the itin is 1-800-908-9982

You should be able to get the number from SSA the day after you apply, even though you won't have the actual card in your hand for a week or two after that. Contact/visit the office where you did your application.
