Police: Pa. man, 70, stoned to death by friend

Friday, March 18, 2011

(03-18) 20:28 PDT Media, Pa. (AP) --

A 70-year-old man was stoned to death with a rock stuffed in a sock by a younger friend who alleged the victim made unwanted sexual advances, authorities said.

According to the criminal complaint, John Thomas, 28, of Upper Darby, a Philadelphia suburb, told police he killed Murray Seidman of nearby Lansdowne because the Bible refers to stoning homosexuals.

"I stoned Murray with a rock in a sock," Thomas told police, according to the criminal complaint. Thomas was arrested and charged with murder Friday.

According to the complaint, "John Thomas stated that he read in the Old Testament that homosexuals should be stoned in certain situations. The answer John Thomas received from his prayers was to put an end to the victim's life. John Thomas stated that he struck the victim approximately 10 times in the head. After the final blow, John Thomas made sure the victim was dead."

"He is a deeply religious man. Or so he says," said Lansdowne Police Chief Dan Kortan.

Delaware County Medical Examiner Fredric Hellman ruled that Seidman had been dead for five to 10 days before Thomas started banging on doors in the hallway of Seidman's apartment building on Jan. 12.

Police said Thomas, who is the executor and sole beneficiary of Seidman's will, returned to the apartment and pretended that he had just discovered Seidman's body.

Thomas had no comment as he was led out of the Delaware County Courthouse on Friday. Seidman was a longtime worker in the laundry department at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, where he was "very popular," Kortan said.

"As far as we are concerned, he was a model citizen," Kortan said.

Because there is a difference between 1 single incident of a religious nutcase/psychopath killing his friend because of sexual advances and a guy chopping off an evil American's head because he thinks he is going to be rewarded by Allah.

Ok, I take that back. They are both pretty much the same thing. The difference is 1 happens every 15 years and the other happens every 15 days.

Do you not see the difference?

Pastor jailed for trafficking African child 'slaves'

A church pastor has been jailed for 11 and a half years after being found guilty of trafficking children into the UK for use as domestic "slaves" at her home in Barking, east London.

Lucy Adeniji brought two children and a 21-year-old woman to the UK from Africa illegally and used them as servants.

She was convicted of 17 different counts at Isleworth Crown Court.

The mother-of-five is the first person to be jailed for trafficking children into the UK for domestic servitude.

In a case that has been likened to modern-day slavery, Adeniji smuggled the three victims into Britain on false passports, and used them as servants at her home in Ray Gardens, Barking.

An illegal immigrant herself, Adeniji, 44 - originally from Nigeria - had told the victims' parents they would have a better life in the UK, but instead viciously beat them if they failed to please her.

Benefits inquiry

The abuse only came to light when one of the victims escaped from Adeniji's home after being beaten.

Adeniji was convicted last month of assault, child cruelty and facilitating illegal entry into the UK of a child.

She also admitted six counts of obtaining false passports for herself and her own children and two counts of facilitating illegal entry.

Adeniji faces a separate investigation into money she claimed in benefits for her own children.

Det Insp Gordon Valentine, of the Metropolitan Police's Operation Paladin - which targets child trafficking - said the case could be the tip of the iceberg.

"The people who are using this form of slavery in their households know it is wrong," he said.

"This case is very important because it shows victims that we can have successful prosecutions and that they can find justice."

The case has echoes of the maltreatment of Victoria Climbié who died at the hands of her guardian, Marie Therese Kouao. She and her boyfriend Carl Manning were found guilty of Victoria's murder in 2003.

Taliban suicide bombers kill 42 at Pakistan shrine

42 dead, 100 more wounded in attack on one of country's most important Sufi Muslim shrine's Sunday

A pair of Taliban suicide bombers struck one of Pakistan's most important Sufi Muslim shrines on Sunday, killing 42 people and wounding 100 who were celebrating the anniversary of its founder's death with music, meditation and other practices abhorred by Islamist militant groups.

Another bomber was wounded when his explosive vest partially detonated. He was arrested along with a fourth militant who was seized before attacking, police official Ahmad Mubarak said.

The attack on the Sakhi Sarwar shrine ended a months-long respite in a relentless militant campaign against the shrines founded by ancient adherents of Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam that sees dancing, chanting and visiting holy sites as expressions of devotion to God. Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan called The Associated Press to claim responsibility for the assault.

"It was a huge blast. People were running in panic," said Fida Bakhsh, 42, a vendor outside the shrine. "It was horrible. We were running over bodies and blood."

Nineteen men, 14 women and nine children were killed, emergency coordinator Natiq Hayat said. Twenty of the wounded were in critical condition, he said.

From one-room tombs in small villages to large complexes in major cities, Sufi shrines are visited by millions of Pakistanis. The sites are anathema to the Pakistani Taliban, al-Qaida and other militant followers of the austere brand of Wahabi Islam that originated in Saudi Arabia.

Followers of the Barelvi school of Islam, one of the two main

of the religion in Pakistan, consider themselves the custodian of the shrines. They have been one of the main targets of Islamist militants since some of their leaders issued edict calling suicide bombings religiously illegitimate.

Several thousand people were marking the 942nd anniversary of the death of the saint Ahmad Sultan, better known as Sakhi Sarwar, at his shrine in the Dera Ghazi Khan district of Punjab province when the bombers struck crowds waiting outside, government administrator Iftikhar Saho said.

A stampede followed the bombings, but it was not immediately clear if that caused any casualties.

Local and foreign Islamist militants have carried out hundreds of attacks in Pakistan over the last three years, targeting government buildings and security forces, Western targets like embassies and hotels as well as religious minorities and Muslim sects they consider heretical.

An assault on the shrine of Hazrat Ali Hajveri, known as Data Sahib, killed 47 people in the city of Lahore in July. The attacks have angered many Pakistani Muslims, who see visiting saints' shrines as the best way to communicate to God.

The government and the army have tried to crack down on the militants, but have struggled to unite the nation against the threat and face persistent allegations they are protecting some extremists. Many Islamist politicians do not publicly criticize the militants, preferring to spread conspiracy theories that American or Indian agents are responsible. These views are widely aired, often uncritically, in some media.

'Wave of terrorism': Blasts hit Rome embassies

Anarchist group claims responsibility for explosions that injure two people

NBC, msnbc.com and news services

updated 12/23/2010 5:02:05 PM ET

ROME — An Italian anarchist group claimed responsibility for parcel bombs on Thursday that wounded two people at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome, a reminder of home-grown threats at a time of political instability in Europe.

A Swiss man was seriously wounded and was rushed to hospital. The employee at the Chilean embassy was less seriously hurt. A note was found stuck to his clothing, claiming responsibility for the attack on behalf of the FAI, or Informal Anarchist Federation.

"We have decided to make our voice heard with words and with facts, we will destroy the system of dominance, long live the FAI, long-live Anarchy," said the note, written in Italian, which was released in the evening by the police.

The explosions triggered heightened security checks at diplomatic missions just as holiday deliveries deluge their mailrooms.

Italian investigators had suspected the attacks were the work of anarchists, similar to the two-day wave of mail bombs that targeted several embassies in Athens last month — including those of Chile and Switzerland. One of last month's booby-trapped packages, addressed to Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, was intercepted in Italy.

Late Thursday night, the Italian news agency ANSA reported that a claim by anarchists was found in a small box near one of the wounded employees, and was being examined by anti-terrorism police squad.

Anarchists were blamed by authorities last week for bloody clashes between protesters and police in Rome that marred otherwise peaceful demonstrations by students against a university reform law. The legislation received final approval in parliament Thursday.

For Thursday's twin embassy mail bombs, less than three hours apart, Italian investigators are pursuing the "trail of anarchists-insurrectionists," Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, whose ministry includes anti-terrorist police, told reporters. "Various elements lead us to think that this is the correct path."

"These are very violent groups that are also present in Spain and Greece and are very well connected," the minister said.

In Athens, Greek law enforcement officials said that Greek anti-terror police were contacted in the evening by Italian colleagues but that no link with the Greek parcel bombs was immediately apparent.

Rome's police chief, Francesco Tagliente, rushing to the Chilean diplomatic mission, said all embassies in the city were being alerted.

For about an hour, it seemed as if the Ukrainian embassy, a few block's away from Chile's embassy, had received a package bomb. But Tagliente said checks showed that the suspicious package there was a "false alarm."

Tens of thousands of tourists and pilgrims have been pouring into Rome this week for Christmas ceremonies at the Vatican.

Since the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States in 2001, security has been tight at public ceremonies in St. Peter's Basilica and Square, with the faithful subject to metal detector checks and purse and backpack inspections.

Swiss Ambassador Bernardino Regazzoni, speaking to reporters outside his embassy, said the device that exploded had been mailed, but he didn't say from where.

Terrorism analyst Evan Kohlmann told NBC News that the Swiss Embassy bomb did not appear to have been "terribly powerful," suggesting the bomber was poorly trained or didn't intend to cause mass casualties.

The bomb at the Chilean embassy was mailed from inside Italy, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. But Chilean Ambassador Oscar Godoy said it wasn't yet clear if the package — a medium-sized envelope big enough to hold documents and addressed to the cultural attache — had been mailed or delivered by a messenger.

"There were no flames, just a little smoke," said Godoy.

Bolt embedded in chest

The bombs seemed aimed to injure if not maim or kill those opening them.

Surgeons removed an iron bolt embedded in the chest of the Chilean embassy employee who opened the package, said Massimiliano Talucci, a spokesman for Umberto Polyclinic I, where the man was hospitalized. The Chilean also suffered a serious hand wound and face injuries, and risks losing the sight in one eye. The Swiss official suffered hand and chest wounds.

With Italy's mail service known for often being slow, if similar package bombs were sent by post to embassies, it might be days before they are delivered.

The package bomb addressed to Berlusconi last month had been sent via a courier service aboard the courier's cargo plane from Greece to Italy.

Chilean envoy Godoy denounced the explosion at his mission as "an absolutely irrational and brutal act," and said there had been no threats to indicate it could be a target.

At the Swiss compound, Regazzoni noted that, besides the anarchist bombs in Greece last month, in early October two bottles with a fuse were found atop an outer wall of the embassy.

Conspiracy Nuclei of Fire

On Nov. 2, suspected Greek anarchists sent 14 mail bombs to foreign embassies in Athens, as well as to Berlusconi, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Two of the devices exploded, causing no injuries.

A group called Conspiracy Nuclei of Fire claimed responsibility for the Greek blasts. It called on militants in Greece and other countries to step up their action, and Greek police noted Thursday that in the past, acts of "solidarity" have been carried out between Greek and Italian militant groups.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Italian diplomats abroad were urged to take precautions.

The Swiss Embassy increased security after consulting with Italian authorities and that security at all foreign missions would be reviewed, Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said. Possible extra measures, she added, could include additional protective walls or fences, surveillance cameras and evacuation plans.

There have been growing concerns in Europe about holiday season attacks following a suicide bombing in Sweden and security services' fears of an assault on a European city modeled on the deadly shooting spree in Mumbai, India.

On Tuesday, there was a bomb scare in Rome's subway system after authorities discovered a suspicious package with wires and powder under a seat. The device ended up being a fake, with police determining there was no trigger mechanism and its the powder was inert, cement-like material.

Reuters, NBC News and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I understand that a story about a single Muslim doing something bad also merits the type of attention that a similar crime by a single non-Muslim doesn't. I understand that it's a COMMON OCCURRENCE for the media to identify the religion of Muslim participants to facilitate the charge that Muslims are more inherently violent and to underplay or totally omit the religion of non-Muslim extremists. I understand also that people here believe anything bad about Muslims, but refuse to be as objective about non-Muslims.

I'm going to give you the news you don't look for or notice because the "bad Islam" bait is missing that makes you take notice.

That was 4 months ago. Got anything from 4 hours ago? How about 4 days ago?

Another key difference is Muslim extremists are just better at killing people. They have training camps and stuff.

Look at the bold: INJURED (not even killed) two people. That is not a successful terrorist attack in my book. Osama would be very disappointed with this type of unprofessional work.

Just getting started. Four months ago is no error. You've missed a lot. My thread, my rules.

Does it ever occur to you that you only get bad news about Muslims, and wonder why the media is so one sided? Even you admit that most Muslims aren't bad, so why are bad Muslims the only bad group getting so much press? Are you so dim that you think this is all there is or that there is nothing going on with bad religious non-Muslims?

It's very easy to kill people with a bomb. It's a lot harder to make a statement without killing anyone.

Seriously, I'm curious. Why do you think it's so easy to find anti-Muslim hate cites on the web, harder to find news articles identifying non-Muslim murderers and hate groups by religion? If news articles identified all perpetrators by their faith or agenda, how would perceptions change?
