Tourism Visa for Brasil

Howdy all!

Hey just wondering if anyone has much experience with the Brasil turista visas and how long they are good for. I had assumed they were only good for 90 days after issue, but now I'm being told they are good for five years.

The turista visa was issued on March 23rd, 2006.

My U.S. passport has the following stamp in it:

FIRST ENTRY MUST TAKE PLACE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF ISSUED DATE. MULTIPLE ENTRIES VISA VALID FOR 90 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF FIRST ARRIVAL. EMPLOYMENT IN BRAZIL PROHIBITED BY LAW.

So I did enter Brazil within the required 90 days mentioned in the first sentence. The second sentence is what is confusing. I had thought that it meant that I can enter Brazil as many times as I wanted within that first 90 days, but now I'm hearing that the visa should be good for five years, and the second sentence is stating that you can stay in Brazil for up to 90 days on any one visit.

I really just need to know if Brazil's tourist visa is valid for 90 days or five years....it would suck to have to pay for a new tourist visa again. It would be helpful if they simply put an expiration date on it.

Thanks!

My first tourist visa was good for only 90 days. However, it was issued while I was living in Uruguay - and I wonder if that was the reason. I was not in my home country and I don't know if that was the reason or not (that was in 2002).

My second tourist visa is good for 5 years - it outlasts my passport even. It does not say that it is good for 5 years - it gives the amount of days - which is equal to 5 years.

Good luck.

My fiance's is good for 5 years too.

It is true that you can stay in Brazil for up to 90 days on any one visit

I'd call the Brazilian embassy where you got yours and ask them tho so you will feel more confident when you get to the airport here :)

Wow, Brazil is generous!

When I get one from China it is good for 1 use in 3-6 months, and visit can be no longer than 30 days, Multi-entry is more and can last up to 2 years. Price $50 for single and $150 for Multi. And if traveling through Hong Kong, the price is $75 for a two entry Visa.

Here is information from the Brazilian Consulate in New York:

• The Tourist Visa is generally good for 5 years with multiple entries. There are, however, exceptions for the duration of the visa, based on the documentation presented and purpose of the trip;

• The tourist visa must be used within 90 days from the date that it was issued;

• All 5-year tourist visa holders, regardless of nationality or the validity date of the visa, may only stay in Brazil for up to 90 days. The Brazilian Federal Police (http://www.dpf.gov.br) may extend the visa, yet it may not exceed 180 days per year, under any circumstances;

• The validity of the visa begins on the date of the first entry in Brazil;

Your visa should be good for 5 years (I know mine is).

Your visa is only good for 90 days from the date of first entry.

Otherwise it would have said "Good for multiple entries within 5 years from date of first entry" like mine does.

You need a new Visa.

If your visa does not have any stamp on it mentioning a five-year period, it is not good for a five-year period. That is something wacky at the discretion of each Brazilian consulate. Many people actually request the 5-year visa. My consulate is Chicago and I did not have to do that.

In addition, if you get the 5-year visa and want to stay more than 90 days in any year, you should get it extended a comfortable period before it expires (they told me 10 days at the policia federal, but I'm not sure that's the "official" line).

Incidentally I have pretty heavily overstayed on that visa and nobody has yet noticed. We'll see what happens in early Oct when I enter from Argentina. :whistle:

My visa is good for 5 years. The stamp should say this. If it doesn't you may have been issued a shorter one. I've heard there is a shorter one, but I'm not sure of this. When I applied, I made sure to ask for a 5 year visa.

I am just wondering, has anyone here ever received a tourist visa to Brazil that was valid for less than 5 years? I assumed that the tourist visa was always valid for 5 years as long as you entered in the 90 days since that is what mine said. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Thanks for all the help. I'm still a bit confused of course as some are saying only 90 days, and some 5 years. I'll contact the Houston office that I hired to obtain the visa for me and see if they can shed some light on it and let you know what they say. Thanks!

Nessa, does his visa state that it's good for five years though? Or do you both know this for some other reason? Because the lines that I wrote above were all that were stamped in my passport....their stamp is very misleading at best.

You have 90 days to enter Brazil after the visa been's issued and as for how long it's good for, it depends on the consulate. It may be good for 5, but it may be good for less than that. So, if it says it's good for a year, for example, you can have the first entry within 90 days of the issuance and then use the same visa to enter again, provided it doesn't exceed the one-year limit.

Like you, my fiance thought that he'd have to get another visa to come (after 6 months or so as of his first entry with the visa), despite my telling him it was not necessary. He called the consulate and they were able to help him.

My first tourist visa to Brasil was good for only a few months.

However, as I said, it was issued to me at an embassy in Uruguay - and I'm an American citizen.

That may have been the reason why...

It's pretty simple really, if your visa says "Vaild for 5 years from date of first entry" then it's vailid for 5 years.

Yours does not say that. You need a new visa.

I know quite a few people who have only been issued 90 day tourist visas.
