pregnant Canadian wife - any loopholes?

Some will - I have coverage through Kaiser Permanente and they allowed me to add my husband to my coverage even though he doesn't have a SSN - they just used mine. OP needs to ask a rep from the health plan if they allow it.

I think this is a key question. I was able to have my Canadian husband covered on my health plan immediately after we were married and they didn't require an SSN. He did use the doctor and they covered it just fine. I believe you need to contact your health insurance to see what they are willing to covered. Also, some companies have the ability to waive initial waiting periods for coverage.

It definately is a great question and you should check with your insurance personnel. When I got here 5 months ago, they allowed my husband to add us but I was not actually covered till I called back in with my ssn. They did waive the wait-time as the next enrollment was a few later due to a "life changing event", Immigrating :)

As to your second point - just curious: usually such a provision means that the insurer will not check marriage papers but are you sure you can add to your plan A PERSON WITHOUT SSN?

I could insure a non-existant mistress on my health insurance if I wanted to, without a SSN, initially. They do ask for a SSN eventually, but all you have to do is inform them when it is in process. Not all insurance companies are this comprehensive, so I don't want to give the impression that this is in any way the norm.

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and they did not require an SSN for my husband.

Thank you all so much for your advice! Especially on the health care issue; I'll get in touch with the various providers and figure out my options. The update on my end is that I'm talking to my employer and gotten the advice of an immigration lawyer, and it's looking like we might be able to work something out. Keep your fingers crossed!

I was added immediately to my wifes Insurance when I moved to the USA.

If you are a church-goer, there are group insurance plans such as Samaritan Ministries. They may not provide full coverage for pregnancy (pre-existing), but they will provide some. I am still waiting for my visa, but I have already joined on my husbands plan. They were not concerned about SSNs or visas.

I would hate to be in your position- We've been careful not to get pregnant anyway, simply because we wouldn't want to be apart. If you need a place to stay in Montreal, I know some nuns who have somewhat of a boarding-house for foreign students... you could maybe try them...

I'm no church goes, lol I think you quoted the wrong person!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
