Nani just learned today that her auntie will share her home with a US exchange student very soon. She has two school age daughers herself (grades 5 and 10). Wow, that is going to be one heck of an experience for the American kid living in an average home in one of the poorest countries on the planet. It's a good home but it's just nowhere near American standards. Imagine sharing a home of no more than 1,000 sqft with a family of 4 and 2 servants.

This is excellent, though, as this brings about some hope that maybe Nani's cousins can eventually take advantage of the exchange program themselves and spend some time in the US and learn at a school here for a little while. They'd love that opportunity.

Just thought I'd share since this makes me really happy. :D

Average Home in the poorest country... With 2 servants (for 4 people)... Is it average, for the poorest country?

Dont worry, Her cousings will use that opportunity. I am not sure if they will get into Exchange program on J-1 visas, But they will surely get into US on k-1 Visas) ;)

Yes it is. Hard to grasp, isn't it? Sorry that this doesn't fall into some easy to comprehend black-and-white scheme. It's very common to have servants in the house in Ethiopia's capital city. ;)

Average family and 2 servants for 4 people is hard to grasp. Especially in the poorest country. I will try to grasp again, 2nite. If fail - Will be back to you for help.

And Your cousins - Stay black stay proud. Dont let this American Kid get everything easily.

This is a great opportunity Reinhard! I hope when our daughter is old enough for this sort of thing that she has this same chance to experience life in another country, another culture and vice versa. Joel and I would love to have a student experience life in the US too. :)

It's futile. Don't waste your time. You won't make it.
