You might run into issues with your teaching credentials if you earned your degree or certification abroad. I haven't taught in nearly 6 years, but I can't imagine much has drastically changed since then. Private schools generally don't have the same standards as public schools and in many cases have diminished criteria.

I think because one needs to have license to teach in America, it depends on which state you are planning to teach. In California, if you earned your credential abroad, they have steps on how to get teaching license but yeah, it is always a process that includes submitting your transcript equivalency to US standard, copy of teaching license/credential abroad, and passing an exam called CBEST. Later on, one can take further examinations to earn a clear credential like CSET and CTEL (this one, depends on the school district), some school districts require their teachers to pass CTEL which is an examination on teaching English learners. Any other thoughts to help our aspiring teachers in CA? :)

Hello...I had my degree in Elementary Education from the Philippines and my license as well..I'm also here in California right now, along the Bay Area..I already got my EAD and waiting for my greencard soon..I've been attending SPED trainings/classes here in our city(for free..lol..a good opportunity as well) while we were on our AOS..but as far as I know, they are closing schools here and been cutting of teachers..somehow, for SPED teachers, still, you got a good chance to work on private schools..check CBEST,..you can't teacher here in California if ever you don't apply or get a teaching permit..as for me, my husband said it's ok if I will just stay at home, but I guess it's really different if we have our own professional growth..Teaching is my passion as well..it's really hard to get into the school districts here, so once I have my greencard in hand, I'm planning to get units in Early Childhood from a college and then maybe find a work soon..there's a greater chance for us to work in preschools or daycares, not so much in public schools...the preparation we had in the Philippines is different compared here..btw, we need to have our education evaluated..hopefully soon we can get a job...hehehe...God bless us all!!...

God bless on your AOS..I've read some forums here that USCIS is more strict when it comes to those who enter through a tourist visa and then filed for AOS..I wish you and your family the best and really pray your case will be approved!!..I know how it feels to be far from your love...just have faith and pray..:-) :)

Hi! Nice to know you are thinking of teaching too. Thanks for wishing me luck. :) It shouldn't be a problem if the marriage is real. They are very strict when it comes to visa fraud and suspiscion of fixed marriages. Good that you are attending free trainings. Where is that? I haven't heard of any. I surely want to try. Maybe we can meet too! :) Oh btw, where in CA are you?

The Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities in the Philippines, which is the only existing law that protects the welfare of persons with special needs, is the basis for the existence of Special Education in the Philippines. It is the origin of the mandate of the Department of Education in he Philippines to have SPED centers in public schools, so, yes we have special education teachers... but the students enrolled here are not given that much support unlike in the United States. We do not have a law as elaborate as that which they have here that even goes as far as giving financial aid to families of children with disabilities...

Interesting to know.

Philippines is a tuff place to live if you are not 100%. The one thing I see if a person has a handicap over there it seems like they really get the short end of the stick.....Blind, Crippled, Retarded, or some type of genetic disease.....

You can start out by substitute teaching in the schools there, and get yourself known! There is always a need for special ed teachers!

I am a graduate of teaching too. Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English. After graduation I worked in a call center for more than a year and I didn't have the chance to get my license. My husband in California said that a license from Philippine is useless. When I get to US, i need to study again for teaching and later on take some exams to be able to teach.

I had 2 months of experience in teaching (just a volunteer though). And I am not planning to teach high school in US, i want kids this time or special kids. What do you think is the chance for me to pursue teaching?

If you are planning to teach in California, the following applies.

Well, the PRC license is not entirely useless. If you look at the website of California Teacher Credentialing Agency, (this is the state department that issues teaching permits/credential), they have separate sets of requirements for those who earned their credential here and those who earned it abroad. A PRC license is one of the requirements (since you are from the Philippines) because this is the proof that you have been licensed to teach in your home country. So, take it while you are still in the Philippines. Another requirement is the possession of a degree/certificate in teaching, which you already have due to your Bachelors. However, teaching special kids is an entirely different story. They will ask you for credits earned which includes special education courses in your transcript, which is proof that you have relevant education pertaining to the types of students that you want to teach. All your college transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited transcript evaluation company, since you graduated abroad and they need to know if your education is of the same degree/level as in US standard. Teaching in California is a process. Also, you need to take the CBEST exam here which is proof that you have the basic skills necessary to teach. Once you have the Basic Requirements specified earlier, you may be given a Level 1 Credential, which allows you to teach in certain settings. After which, within 5 years, you have to satisfy the other requirements to reach Level 2 credential, which is where the taking of other exams and further studies come in...

In any case, good luck and anything is possible with God. :):):)
