Is the Police Cerificate & Criminal record the same thing?

Since I lived in the third country before, I will need to obtain a police certificate from them. Im confused about what I've read. It says the police certi for US consulate is based on name check but not fingerprint check. What on earth do I need exactely for my interview and all? Police certificate or crinimal record?

Thanks

You need a police certificate from every place you have lived for over 6 months from the age of 16.

I knew that. That's why I asked what I asked. Thanks

Police Cert. is a name check .. it does not involve fingerprints. And if you knew already it's a police certificate you need why are you asking "Police certificate or crinimal record?" Your Welcome :)

Aeris, maybe this will help you understand the whole security issue.

There's security checks involved at USCIS level: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/publicaffair...hecks_42506.pdf - which includes name checks and fingerprint checks for many kinds of applications.

Then NVC run their own security checks again, and so does the consulate/embassy: http://www.usaimmigrationattorney.com/Secu...tiveReview.html

And to quote aussiewench:

Name/Security checks are a normal process with NVC/consulates but the wait time at NVC is generally not too long as cases can and will be forwarded to the consulate prior to the name/security checks being cleared. If an advisory oppinion is requested this can cause lengthy delays. Advisory opinions are usually to do with a point of immigration law. Administrative processing (name/security checks etc) usually refers to a legally mandated security check the Department of State (NVC) must do for all applicants/beneficiaries over the age of 16. The length of time one can be held up in administrative processing will vary as some countries are subject to closer scrutiny. The process normally takes four to six weeks but as I said it can be much longer. Fingerprints are sometimes required at consulate level but this is all a part of the initial administrative processing that began at NVC. Once an interview is held a visa will not be issued until/unless clearance has been received. In most cases (again dependent of country), administrative processing will be completed and clearance granted well before an interview is even held.

Apart from that, the beneficiary has to provide the consulate with police certificates obtained from every place they've lived for more than 6 months, including foreign countries. Link to info on how to obtain them: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...st&p=342987

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

In short, if you have no criminal record you get a police certificate, if you have a criminal record you'll need to submitt the criminal records for all crimes listed in the police certificate.
