Topic moved from AOS from a work, student and tourist visa forum to Moving Here and Your New Life in America as it is not really a discussion about the AOS process and is more appropriate here. As well, 2 posts asking about a related question but a separate situation have been split off to make their own topic. These posts can now be found here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/297654-obtaining-credit-statuts-as-a-new-arrival/

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

i would say no.

It is possible. I have seen it happen before to a relative of mine. He owes hospital bills from a surgery and at the time he didn't have a SSN. About two years after he received his SSN he went to a car dealer to purchase a car. The salesperson ask him if he have reasonable credit and he told that he have absolutely no credit, to his surprise when they pull his credit the hospital bills show up.

Even if your bad credit eventually cross references itself and appears on your credit report under your new SSN - the burden of proof is on the creditor to prove that the debt is valid. Since they didn't have your SSN to begin with, this could be difficult for them - I would check your credit reports through the free option every year and just keep an eye on them -

Not that I would advise you to duck debts, but you should be able to protect your new credit report and build up positive credit.
