Great topic. I'll remember this post for cooking ideas when my fiancee gets here. No balut though. I remember that episode on Fear Factor. I also saw my fiancee and friends eating balut on skype. They enjoy sucking out the juices. Oh my gosh. I can't watch it without getting sick.

My experience with Balut was my first night in Phils. The brother in law pulled over and found the guy yelling "Balut" on the side of the road. Hehe. The secret is lots of salt. I was not going to be out done, so I ate it. It is actually not bad at all. Just don't look at it, just eat it. Supposed to be an aphrodisiac.....hehe.(Not like we needed it)

And I love coming home from work and finding what new thing my wife has made for me during the day.....fresh calamares, sinigang, laing, and adobo or talapia. What ever her heart desires, or my stomach. LOVE IT!!!! She has some great recipes, and knows what to sub for here in the US, even though it took us forever to find some hot dogs that was close enough to TnJ, as I HATE American hot dogs now. So feel free to email her and ask on here.

Ingat!!

I hate hot dogs. Is there a big difference between Philippines hot dogs and american ones? I didn't eat any when I was visiting the Phils, but noticed they wrap them individually there. My fiancee and her family love hot dogs. They want to eat them in everything, even for breakfast. If they don't taste the same here, then I'll need to find the ones she likes. Where do you find them?

Ingat din.

Hi Messybrownhair,

When I came here I didn't know how to cook except for the usual frying & boiling of egg. Just like you I thought it would be difficult to live by just eating fast food as I was used to having home cooked meals back home. Since everything is on the web these days, I would browse recipes of food I'm craving for on any given day and if I found it confusing I would always search it on youtube.com for the complete demo.If I needed an ingredient substituted, I'd google it. Some of the websites I found useful on a regular basis were allrecipes.com, epicurious.com, foodnetwork.com and most recently for healthy food I check out wholefoods.com, traderjoes.com & wholeliving.com.

My husband likes afritada [he calls it chicken casserole], pancit, lumpia & the Filipino version of baked macaroni [ in my case i do penne] & baked spaghetti. I still haven't gotten around making the lumpia. Anyway, here are few blogs of Filipinos overseas who loves to cook http://trissalicious.com , http://kusinanimanang.blogspot.com , panlasangpinoy.com. I hope you find these helpful.

By the way, your website was lovely.

Congratulations on your coming wedding & best of luck on your new life in the US.

As my wife is an excellent cook, I told her about your post...and that your fiance doesn't like sinigang. Keep in mind I had never had sinigang, so guess what we ended up having for dinner that night? It wasn't nearly as sour as I thought it'd be, and the soup broth goes good over the rice.

I'm *really* going to miss these wonderful meals  (I leave the Philippines on the 28th)

Aww YodaPagoda.. I hope your application process goes quick so that you guys can be together again soon!

I don't know why he isn't a fan of sinigang, I happen to love it! And sadly, its one of the filipino dishes I happen to know how to make! haha :)

the sourness of the sinigang actually depends on the person eating/cooking it. i myself like it sour. but when i cook for the wife and the kids, i lighten up on the sinigang mix.

and as far as the balut goes...there are actually ones that has barely the chick in it. you just have to get the right magbabalut.

to keep in line with the topic...three of my favorite dishes are adobong sitaw, binagoongan pork ribs, and of course, pinakbet!!

I enjoy most Filipino food. Chinook and I eat Filipino meals more than half the time.

However, there are some things I don't care for...tuyo...bagoong...Filipino spaghetti...banana ketchup...and MSG.

Chinook sometimes gets a Pinoy recipe from the internet. Thanks to everyone who provided links to more web sites.

The ingredients may be, at times, challenging to find. But it is very do-able.

Marc...

Chinook and I have had good luck finding the ingredients for Filipino dishes in the Seattle area.

One of the places we shop for Filipino groceries is at Fou Lee market on Beacon Hill, at the corner of Beacon Avenue South and Alaska Street.

Another place we shop for groceries is at the new Seafood City at Southcenter. Also, there is a Tokyo Tokyo, as well as a Chow King, Jollibee, and Red Ribbon at that location.

Ranch Market in Kent at the Great Wall shopping center also has Filipino groceries.

Our two favorite Filipino restaurants in the Seattle area are the Kawali Grill in Rainier Valley at Columbia City, and Inay's on Beacon Avenue South. There's also a good Filipino bakery one block from Inay's called Delite Bakery.

Maybe you have tried some of these places.

My wife is an excellent cook. I see her going to the internet and Youtube to cook PI food.

I love Philippines Food and she seems to love to cook, I don't do fast food and we eat healthy.

Besides my wife being beautiful and intelligent, she is also a great cook
