My passport expired. Will USCIS ask for my passport during the interview? Or will they ask me to renew my passport before they approve my green card? I do have an American drivers license.

You must have a current passport that will not expire within six months of the interview and visa approval.

I thought since I was not leaving United States for any reason I would not need passort renewed. I also called my embassy recently. And they told me it takes more than 45 days to renew my passport, and there is no quick way.

Shami, are you already in the US having entered on another visa? Since you have a US DL, I assume so. I'm not sure if this pertains to your situation but I recently read on immigrate2us.net that for in-country AOS, a current passport is NOT required.

"They only need your passport to see determine if you were lawfully inspected. They don't need the passport to be still valid, unless you have no other government issued ID to get into the federal building. The interview letter states "or national ID" .

Have you received an interview letter yet? If so, check to see what the requirements are but apparently you will be fine with an ID. The post also commented that few people actually get a stamp in their passport these days (too easy too copy) and instead you just wait for the green card to be mailed.

Probably USCIS don’t care whether you lived here legally or illegally. I went for my biometrics appointment last Monday. When I went for my biometrics appointment I showed my US Id. I saw on a previous post USCIS stamped their permanent residency on their passport. So I thought I needed my passport. But I have not received a date for my interview date yet. I didn’t want to go to the interview knowing they are not going to approve my GC because of my passport.

You will need to show your passport as proof that you entered the country legally - this is a very important detail because people who entered illegallly cannot adjust their status in the US.

Other than that, you can enter the facility for the interview with your US ID. They won't stamp your permanent residency in an expired passport but that does not mean they won't approve your GC. Best to double check your interview letter when you receive it - I assume the wording will be the same as the post I quoted you and you should be just fine. Good luck.

My husband went to his embassy, paid a fee, and got a renewal sticker in his passport on the spot instead of waiting 4-6 weeks for a new one. We wanted to keep the passport with his student visa and everything else in it until we are approved.

I went to my Bio and Interview with my expired passport and I had no problem at all.

Relax - to get into the building, you just need a DL or govt. ID. For the interview he/she will take your passport to remove the I-94 and to check your entry dates if he/she wants to. Don't worry about the expired passport - if asked, tell them you had no intention of traveling out of the country for a long time. Good Luck

By the way - since my wife wasn't approved at the time of the interview - her I94 was not removed. Later on when we traveled - the airlines person removed her I94. (she had received her green card 8 weeks after the interview.)
