I have been in the States since the beginning of July and have applied for a SSN 3 times with no luck. The first time we got told i was not in the system and it would take about 12 weeks for it to come and i may as well cancel and reapply in a few weeks time. The 2nd time i am pretty sure the lady did not send off my docs, i called after waiting for 8 weeks and again we were told I was not in the system but as my I-94 had expired we couldnt get one anyway. (We applied in enough time before my I-94 was due to expire, it was there fault for not sending off the documents.) Anyway, my EAD arrived and we went and applied again last week to be told it could take about 6 weeks due to me not being in the system - WTH?!

My question is why am i still not in the system after 6 months of being in the States? We have our GC Interview on the 21st Jan so its not like the government have forgotten i am here.....it is very frustrating as i cannot be put on the lease or join my husbands bank account without a SSN, i even have work authorization but am still unable to work without a SSN. Has this happened to anyone else?

I have contacted the local congressman and they are willing to look into this for me but i am wondering, before i complete all the forms for them, if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Thanks

I can take several weeks for USCIS to update the S.A.V.E. system as to immigrations status. SSA cannot issue a SSN until they can confirm K-1 visa entry, EAD approval or Green-card Approval.

Did you enter on a K-1 fiancee visa?? If so you should have applied for SSN within 75 days of entry on the K-1, after that and you have to wait for EAD or Green-Card to apply for SSN. Only persons authorized to work in the USA can apply for a SSN, a person who enters the USA on most NON-Immigrant visas are NOT authorized to work.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I would say you messed up by not letting the first application play out, but that is history now. Office saying you are not in the system, might not mean there is no record. They might just be saying that to mean they can't verify your status. It could be a name misspelling, or incorrect date of birth.

Contacting a congressman could possibly help, but SSA is most likely going to put the blame on immigration. We can't process the application until the immigration status can be verified, and their records are incorrect, or they are slow to respond.

Entered on K1, applied twice before my I-94 expired (as they screwed up the first time and gave me wrong info) and applied for a third time with my EAD (Work Authorization), i have been in the States for 6 months so confused why the database would not have been updated by now.

Thanks

I don't think YuandDan even bothered to read your OP on this one. Just texted you with some info.

For everyone else's info: Customs & Border Protection can get into the SAVE database. I just thought of this this morning. They helped us when my husband's info was entered incorrectly at his POE. You'd need to take your passport to a local deferred inspection point and ask them to look into it for you, but if you weren't entered correctly they would be able to look it up by your I-94 number and figure out why.

You might also try the DOS if the CBP doesn't help you, but I'm pretty sure when it comes to the SAVE database they are your best bet.

This is no good. The I-94 has expired, so the CBP isn't going to be able to enter the current status into SAVE. I suggested that they send an e-mail to SSA.
