Can I get RRSP withholding tax back?

Before I moved to USA,I had withdrew some money from my RRSP and of course CRA deducted some tax on it .I was wondering if there is a way that I can get that withholding tax back when I file my taxes in 2011 for Canada?

Doubt it - if you still lived in Canada at the time you withdrew it, why would they refund your tax money? Your earned the income in Canada and withdrew it while still a resident there. You didn't pay tax anywhere esle on it.

fairly decent usa/tax forum: http://forums.serbinski.com/viewforum.php?f=2 ensure u do a search--as Nelsona can be a bit grumpy,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I have done the same thing. I think I remember my CFP telling me that it is possible to get some foregin tax credits in the US, but I never really looked into it. Please let me know what you find out!!

I had another thought after my first post...are you filing 2010 US taxes as well? If so you're claiming the RRSP withdrawal as income, correct? You may well be able to get some tax back by filing a section 217 wityh your Cdn taxes which is used when you've reported income and been taxed twice from the US and Canada.

It's a Cdn tax form filed with your Cdn taxes to hopefully get some (usually not all) of the double tax back as I understand it. The tax forum that Flames linked will have references to it.
