Hi All,

I am a huge bind. My church requires that all members who would marry a foreign girl be married in such a way that it is recognized by the US (in my case). In order to do that I need a Nepalese marriage certificate. Based on the US embassy website (http://nepal.usembassy.gov/service/passports-notaries-and-other-support-for-u/marriage-to-a-nepali.html) that involves the following:

Registering your marriage at the CDO

To apply for a Government of Nepal-issued marriage certificate, you must submit the Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry with other required papers at the CDO office. The CDO also requires evidence of your nationality (U.S. passport), photographs, and a nominal processing fee. After you apply, the CDO will check your legal status in Nepal with various government offices. This process may take some weeks. After the CDO processes your application, they will issue a marriage certificate, which is usually written in both Nepali and English.

I need to find an attorney who can assist me with doing this remotely. Can anyone recommend anyone or an attorney in Nepal that can assist me with this? I am in dire straights because the wedding is on 12/19/2010 and I arrive on 12/18/2010 at 12:45 PM. Is there any hope I can complete this process on 12/18/2010? I really need this help.

So, you're saying you set a marriage date without first checking to see what you were going to have to do to actually accomplish a legal marriage?

I take it you were reading from this site. http://nepal.usembassy.gov/service/passports-notaries-and-other-support-for-u/marriage-to-a-nepali.html

If so, that's what you do. It starts with you being present at the Embassy to obtain the affidavit mentioned in the first paragraph. It sounds to me like your wedding date will need to change. What's unclear is whether you can accomplish the marriage in a legal way right away and then simply wait to have the marriage certificate. Waiting for the certificate doesn't mean you aren't legally married. Depending on the country or US State, you might need to wait some weeks for a certificate from a government agency that says you married legally weeks ago, no matter where the marriage took place. (Yes, even in an LDS Temple)

In short, "legal marriage" and "government issued marriage certificate in hand" are separate issues that commonly occur with some time between them.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
