DALLAS - A North Texas man talking on his cell phone was rushed to a nearby hospital after his phone apparently exploded Thursday morning.

The unidentified man was at Ray Elementary in Cedar Hill at the time of the incident. The man said he was talking on his cell phone when he said he heard a loud "pop." His ear then began to bleed profusely, and he was immediately taken to the emergency room at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

It has not yet been determined exactly what happened to the phone. While an exploding phone is rare, it is not unique.

Just a few months ago, a 23-year-old man died after his phone exploded in North India.

Most reports of exploding phones happen when they are in charging mode, which was the case in China. The phone of a 27-year-old housewife exploded while she was talking to her husband as the phone was being charged. She too was killed.

There was another incident reported in Wyoming a few years ago. A 19-year-old co-ed suffered second to third-degree burns while sleeping. Her phone had been charging near her when it caught fire. She was injured while trying to extinguish the fire.

It was in direct response to the Wyoming case that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued warnings for cell phone users. Among tips released by the CPSC were making sure your cell phone is compatible with your battery. Also, it warned users to keep batteries away from metal objects while phones are not in use. Phones should also be kept away from liquids and users should be careful that they do not overheat.

Wow, I had never heard of anything like this. I do wonder what sorts of phones these are that are exploding.

I hadnt heard anything like this either. My phone does get hot when charging but I've only noticed it if ive sat it on the bed to charge. I wonder if these are all the same brand or if they're random phones.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

What business does the government have issuing warnings about cell phones? Sticking their nose where it doesn't belong once again. A few isolated incidents so what? There is no evidence that cell phones are dangerous in any way. Nothing was mentioned about the genetics of the people injured or killed. Perhaps they had softer skulls than normal and this lead to their injuries. People should be free to chose for themselves and if they get hurt, so what. Attention government, butt out and leave us alone!!!

I like Government health related advice. You have the option to ignore if you wish.

I was being sarcastic since Paul started a thread about smoking not being harmful and that the government shouldn't be involved with whether people should smoke or not. It was done quite tongue in cheek.

Copy that. My post was for those that may not "get it".

Edit to add: The Government should make recommendations, as opposed to policy about issues such as smoking. We need some personal choices in this life. Anything over that is oppression.

Paul's point of view was that the gov was over reacting that cigarette smoking by itself was not necessarily harmful and that other factors needed to be considered too. I agree with personal choice in smoking, but to argue that it isn't harmful is a bit over the top IMHO.
