You can adjust your status while in-country. Be advised that once you send these papers, you cannot leave the US until you receive your temporary travel permission which will take about 2-3 months. Once you get your greencard, your temporary travel permission is no longer needed, the GC gives you that freedom by itself. The whole process is taking about 3-4 months. Also, this is your one special chance to go this route, so don't leave the country on your F-1 visa and then come back and plan to do what I suggest... this is your chance to do it now :) Good luck.
