Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap car insurance for immigrants or people who have just got their US license? I came here and drove on my UK license before getting my US one but it seems car insurance companies dont want to know about previous driving experience in other countries, they base their quotes as if you are a totally new driver. I am getting quoted about $200 a month for car insurance! Anyone suggest any good companies? Thanks

I have GEICO. When I first added my wife to my policy (she is a brand new driver) they didn't raise my premium at all. When it was time to renew, they sent me a questionnaire asking me to "update" details like how long she's had a license and how many miles I have on my car etc. I sent all that in and they decreased my 6-month premium by 50 dollars.

Of course, then I went ahead and got my wife a new car and that increased my premium slightly over 100%.

Sounds about right, unfortunately....

Try geico.com - you can get a quote online. Play with the numbers (deductibles, etc)

until you get a quote you can live with.

it depends on where one lives as to how much the insurance is a month. i've got two vehicles and i'm paying just under $100 a month total on both. both have full coverage, with a $200 comprehensive and $250 collision deductible.

I used Progressive. When I first got here I paid around $500 per 6 mths, I only had Indonesian license. But back then I drove a 1992 Ford Taurus which was over 10 yrs old, so it's cheaper. Once I got my license 3 mths later, they reduced the rate by around $50 and it keeps decreasing every 6 mths since I've never had any claims or traffic violations.

I just logged on to my geico policy and got a quote for increasing both deductibles for my car from 500 to 1000. Reduction in my 6-month premium was $20. Totally not worth it :(

Geico also gives you discounts for various things, such as:

- daytime running lights

- anti-theft / alarm systems

- new car discount

- air bags

- anti-lock brakes

- defensive driving courses

I'm taking a defensive driving course in September, which should give me a

10% reduction on my liability, no fault, and collision premiums for 3 years.

I used Progressive.

The quote I got from Progressive was a ridiculous $400 / month, which didn't even include

anything beyond basic coverage.

You mileage may vary.
