RICE!

Hey all. Bel is coming here soon, and one thing we "worry" about is rice.

Bel has had rice with almost every meal of her entire life, which I imagine is quite common for Filipinas. She doesn't want to abandon rice immediately when she gets here, and I certainly understand. Rice is easy to have at home, of course. But, when we go out, I want to ensure we go places with the type of rice she's accustomed to. Many restaurants don't even have rice at all. Many have rice that's not very Asian and probably won't suffice.

So, what restaurants do you all visit here in the US which have the "right" kind of rice? Of course most decent Teriyaki, Thai, and other Asian places will. But, what about national chain restaurants? I'm talking big known names like Outback, Chilies, Applebees, or even like Ruth's Chris type places.

Somehow, I feel like a poet could turn this post into a funny poem.

I'm Cambodian, we Khmers eat Jasmine rice. I've seen some of the chains serve rice on some of their dishes but it's not like the ones eaten at home. Panda express but I've never even stepped foot in one of them before. I would say just make it a journey when going out to eat and maybe get a cookbook and hit up your local supermarket.

You should probably post your actual location or city, as that will help narrow things down. A big city with a big Asian (or if you're lucky, a more specific Filipino) population should have groceries and restaurants where you can buy rice. Las Vegas and many parts of California are examples of these places.

There are also quite more and more branches of Filipino fastfood chains in the US nowadays, although most of them are also located at areas where there is a big Filipino population. Examples of fastfood & bakery chains in the US are Jolibee, Chowking, Max's (of Manila / of the Philippines), Barrio Fiesta, Kamayan, Mamon Luk, Goldilocks, Red Ribbon, Lydia's Lechon, Wendy's (Filipino), etc.

Just try surfing the internet for them, and there are a lot of websites that lists these restaurants. Try "Filipino restaurant in the US <your_specific_location_>" or "Filipino fast food chain in the US".

Hey thanks. Yeah, as mentioned, I'm not worried about the rice at home. Easy peasy. Just about when we go out.

We'll be in the Vancouver, WA/Portland, OR area.

were going to move to WA on april next yr Tacoma area a friend of mine who's living there told me that theres jollibee and chowking in WA you can try chinese buffet also they serve rice

@Kevin...Chinook managed to survive and thrive here in the States despite not eating the perfect rice with every meal. Besides, she doesn't want to be babied that way anyway.

@Dianne...If you are looking for Filipino fast food in the Puget Sound area, Jollibee, Chow King, Tokio Tokio, and Red Ribbon just opened right next to the new Seafood City at the Westfield Southcenter Mall in Tukwila. Guaranteed you'll be in Pinoy-grocery heaven at Seafood City. Fou Lee on Beacon Hill in Seattle is another good place to shop for Filipino groceries.

If you are craving better Filipino food, try Kawali Grill on Rainier Avenue or Inay's on Beacon Hill.

There are some decent turo turos in the area too.

I buy Wal-Mart (Great Value) brand and Publix-brand white long grain rice. What you need is a rice cooker! Ours is a black Aroma brand one, which we bought at Target. Cooks perfectly every time...am sure your wife will agree, it is good rice!

This is funny. I just now discovered that there's a Chowking in the same shopping center as the LBC I go to every couple weeks, because I searched after reading these replies. Hahaha. It's around a corner from the LBC so I never drive over to that side to see it. Then I saw there's a Jollibee a bit further down the road. But oh well, I won't be living here by next week, heheheh. No Jollibee or Chowking that I can find in the Portland area.

Interestingly enough, the search led me to find that Jollibee imports it's french fries through the Port of Portland. So the french fries in the Philippines come through Portland, heheheh.

Your wife is fortunate to have a Filipino food chains and also maybe some Filipino restaurants nearby. Here in our place, there is nada!

(and I think) The only restaurants that serves rice are Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai and their rice sucks! LOL!

Eating rice outside is not worth it. We don't eat rice everyday but we do buy (Jasmine) rice at the asian market and cook some ourselves when we're hungry for it.

In new york? wow!! we have very good Philippines restaurants, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish (very high qualify restaurants and a bit of their culture)

Try Carolina jasmine. Pretty good. That is the one I use at home. So so so so delicious. I am a white rice maker master that is the nickname my friend gave me. So if it is for rice, my baby, oppsss my fiancee will have no problems we always discuss and I show her on webcam while cooking it.
