BALTIMORE – Developing: Baltimore police say they're setting up a tactical operation to deal with a gunman who is holed up on the eighth floor of Johns Hopkins hospital after shooting a doctor.

A spokesman for Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore earlier said the gunman had been caught, but police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says that's not the case.

Guglielmi says some parts of the hospital are being evacuated, but not the entire massive complex in east Baltimore.

"The situation is under control and we are waiting to get in contact with the suspect," Guglielmi told Fox News. "We plan for situations like this. We practice for situations like this."

With more than 30,000 employees, Johns Hopkins Medicine is among Maryland's largest private employers and the largest in Baltimore. The hospital has more than 1,000 beds and more than 1,700 full-time doctors.

The physician who was shot is undergoing emergency surgery and is reportedly in critical condition.

There were unconfirmed reports that the gunman may have taken at least one person hostage.

Wasn't there a medical drama show that at season end, they had a scenario of a gunman shooting dead at least one person in a hospital? One other copy cat incident was in a Tom Clancy book...

And he shot her doctor who had to go to surgery and they think he's going to be alright.

We called all morning when we saw the news because dh's sister is a fellow there. We finally reached his BIL and they were ok because they weren't at the hospital but the doctor that was shot was one of dh's BIL's good friends from when he was an orthopedic fellow there in the years prior.

That's good because they don't have sharp pointy things in the ER.

Well, at least they'll be stabbed with something sterile, anyway.
