Hi Everyone

Just wondering if anyone in the process of cr-1 has managed to get a joint bank account ( while visiting spouse in the usa) without having a social security number. If so any tips on how would be greatly appreciated. I did read that you may need to print off part of the patriot act - can someone guide me to which part? thanks in advance.

Hello,

I went to visit Julie in San diego in Dec 2009 ona B-1 visa before we filed and we manged to get a joint bank account through San Diego County Credit union. I had no SSN and still not yet and we now have a joint bank account. It can be done just pressure them, If your SO has significant assets it will also work in your favor.

Good Luck

Shelby

Well that actually depends on the bank and the manager at the bank.I ended up emailing everywhere to ask if I could be added on to an account or if we could open a new account etc, most places said it was possible as long as he was a us citizen. My husband had a account at Wachovia last year and We just walked in and put me on the account, I had to show my passport(and a marriage certificate as my passport was still in my maiden name)within moments we had a joint account. Then April of this year we opened a new account at M&T, again we had no problems and I am still waiting for Case complete. All I can suggest is find the closest banks in the area and give them a call, I was told it is really up to the manager of the bank. I can suggest Wachovia which is now called something else, m&t or Pnc. Good luck and just explain the situation

We got a joint bank account without his S.S. number with Wells Fargo using our family based K3 visa and explaining we were in the AOS process. All they required was a copy of our official marriage certificate with official translation and a copy of his passport with visa.

I visited the Bank Of America the other week, and they said that I could open a bank account with my passport and Canadian drivers licence. I didnt need any other ID. I didnt, I was just inquiring what they needed to do this for me. I didnt ask about a joint account, but I doubt it would be much of an issue. Why dont you find the 1800 for the bank your interested in and call them.

this thread is really helpful, me and my husband are going through the same thing, although he is with US bank, and still waiting to hear from them.

I doubt I can get on a joint bank account, because I am not in the states to visit the bank in person, everything has been via Fax, phone calls and mail.
