I speak horrible English with my wife.

I'm guilty of that too. With Anna's sister still here I find myself conversing half the night away in broken English. I know the words they know and It's just easier to use them instead of explaining every other word I'm using.

Glad its not just me then! Do you guys find yourself fantasizing about being able to have a normal conversation without having to explain things? I love her and Im in this for the long haul but at times it would be nice just to be able to speak normally and at a normal speed

That will come with time and education. Get her in some ESL courses or even advanced English courses depending on her level. I think we are all guilty of it but it is best to speak in normal language, answer the questions as needed (they become fewer) but slowly. What freaks Alla out is when people hear her accent and immediately begin talking LOUDER!!!!! She says "What is wrong with people? I am Ukrainian...I AM NOT DEAF!!!!!!!!!!"

Just keep at it and purposefully spend time for it. Alla and I have our personal quality time together after Leonid goes to bed by 8 p.m. We them sit together, either at the dining table or the living room during the winter or out on the deck next to the fire pit during the summer and have a conversation. In the beginning, yes it was rather a stuttering, slow delivery and I too found myself emulating that. But what you need to do is speak slowly, maybe repeat yourself, and when appropriate offer corrections to her delivery. After 10 months of doing this virtually every night, we have regular conversations about all sorts of topics. She can speak in a regular manner using new words she learns from her own studies, from reading or TV or from her online classes. I find I do not have to "correct" her (usually its just verb tense) as often.

By her listening to you speak and by you speaking slowly but using normal words and a normal delivery, she will begin to catch on.

We do the same...but in the bathtub. Seems to help. Besides, you can never have an argument if you are naked and up to your neck in warm water. Impossible.
