Does anyone have any experiences finding a job when they are registered in CSMLS/CSLT in Medical Laboratory Science and working in the US? Seems the US requires a degree for Medical Technlogist jobs whereas Canada you just need a diploma.

Thanks.

Medical technologist is a 4 year degree in the US, and medical laboratory technician is a 2 year diploma. Unlike in Canada, licensing requirements in the USA vary from state to state. To my knowlege, CSMLS certifications are not recognized anywhere in the US. I'm not sure currently, but the past, some states did not require a license so you basically just needed the degree or diploma. Other states, like California have their own license.

For most states, the requirement is the MT degree or MLT diploma and then to take an exam for a nationally recognized US license. The ASCP license is the most common (www.ascp.org). To be eligible to write the exam, they may accept your Canadian education/experience directly or you may have to first get it evaluated by an accepted evaluation service.

Unfortunately their site is down for maintainance as I am writing this and I can't remember the exact requirements. If you go to the site, you will be able to see the eligibility requirements.

Often, employers will list the job requirements with something to the effect of "must have 2 year medical laboratory technician diploma and be ASCP eligible" in which case you can apply prior to actually having the ASCP license.
