Beneficiary's parents do not approve of the marriage

If the beneficiary's parents do not approve (one doesn't even know) of our marriage, will they deny his visa?

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't really concerned because we have all the substianting proof of the legitimacy of our relationship including boarding passes from 4 trips to india within one year..if that ain't love, i don't know is..lol.but i have been researching the interview questions and time after time, this same one keeps coming up of whether or not the parents have met the spouse etc...and if they are ok with the marriage. In our case, he pretty much rebelled against his parents which is completely out of the ordinary for India. Just making sure that isn't going to hurt us.

I wouldn't imagine they'd ask him that. If asked the question about whether or not the two met each other, then answer just either yes or no, whichever is true. No need to elaborate or worry. I highly doubt they would probe into either answer you give, and if they do, just explain they don't really approve because of traditions or whatever, and leave it at that. It won't affect your case even if the question is asked, so don't worry.

We got our interview date today...and of course he is visiting his parents in Kolkata and has his phone off...so I cannot even tell him. It is september 2 at 9am so he has to get his medical like yesterday!

Frankly, this is a big deal in India. Consulates and interviews are region and culture-specific and what might fly in Japan or in the UK may not fly in India. Indian parents don't NOT attend their son's wedding unless they are dead. Doesn't happen. EVER.

Your husband should be prepared to answer questions thoroughly and adequately.

In the end, the fact that your in-laws are against this marriage could actually work for you guys instead of against you. He is marrying, forgive me for being so blunt -- a Western divorced woman with a kid from a previous marriage -- not exactly in accordance with Indian norms and customs. IF his parents were all for it, right from the get-go, and welcomed you whole-heartedly, it would actually look more weird, IMO, and the Consulate would be a lot more suspicious that his parents were encouraging some sort of fraud relationship for the sake of a GC and their potential for immigrating to the US in the future.

Provide evidence, and I think you have plenty, argue your case effectively and I think he will be fine.

My USC husband's parents were unable to attend our wedding but I did have notarized affidavits from them and pictures with them. I had also met them several times while in college. So we were okay in that regard and no questions were asked.

BTW, I'm sorry you're having trouble with your in-laws. That sucks, truly.

I didn't think about it that way but you are right. They specifically don't want him to leave India as his sister has already moved to London and I am sure they are afraid they won't be taken care of. Our plans are to eventually return to India but until my daughter is older, we have to live in the US and neither of us can stand being apart. I am compiling a list of questions they will potentially ask so he can be prepared. With our relationship being so abnormal, I think they may question him a little harder and I don't want him to get nervous. He is already struggling with all of this anyway because he is leaving everything he has ever known. My fear is that the culture is so strong there, that they just won't be able to understand how he could fall in love and marry a divorced westerner with a kid from previous marriage....who is 3 years his elder...and just assume its fraud because its sooo abnormal. We have fought so hard and been through so much for us not to be able to finally be together. You are right, it really does suck...I am always hopeful though, whenever they are ready, I will be ready to welcome them with open arms. I know they are wonderful people...he is so great, and they raised him..so they must be. I will definately post how it goes! And he still has no idea that he interviews in just a couple of weeks.
