Scientists Find New Superbug Spreading From India

Researchers said on Wednesday they had found a new gene called New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, or NDM-1, in patients in South Asia and in Britain.

NDM-1 makes bacteria highly resistant to almost all antibiotics, including the most powerful class called carbapenems, and experts say there are no new drugs on the horizon to tackle it.

With international travel in search of cheaper healthcare increasing, particularly for procedures such as cosmetic surgery, Timothy Walsh, who led the study, said he feared the new superbug could soon spread across the globe.

In a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal on Wednesday, Walsh's team found that NDM-1 is becoming more common in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan and is also being imported back to Britain in patients returning after treatment.

"India also provides cosmetic surgery for other Europeans and Americans, and it is likely NDM-1 will spread worldwide,'' the scientists wrote in the study.

Several of the British NDM-1 positive patients had recently traveled to India or Pakistan for hospital treatment, including cosmetic surgery, they said.

And that reminds me. I saw something very disturbing this morning on the drive in. It's going to sound like a stereotype, but it's real. Part of my drive is a 1 mile stretch at 25mph through a nice road with sheep farms and McMansions (odd combination, I know). I always see women jogging and walking on that road and most of the time they are hot and in shape as women in that strata of society tend to be. The woman I saw this morning though, I swear to you... she had a face like it came out of Star Trek. I drove right by her so that's just an instantaneous impression, but there was something fu##ed up about her face. The rest of her was fine. Put a paper bag over that face and very tappable. But oh my lord that face. It's a good thing I woke up late this morning and didn't have a chance to grab breakfast before I left.

It has to be a weird mental addiction for some people, since it doesn't look good. Saw someone in a store recently with that extreme work done on her face, she was probably in her 60's. She had a raspy voice too, talking on the phone. It almost hurts to look at it, you wonder why ohhh why did you do this to your face. She would have looked much better without it all I am sure.

Oh and that superbug thing from India is scary sounding.
