Does anyone know the most amount of cash one can bring into Vietnam without tariff?

You must declare currency: over US$3,000 or equivalent value

I never really gave it much thought . I've always carrried a money pouch underneath my jeans. i had several thousands dollars each time. I would of used my credit card but i'm in the country side several hours south of Saigon never saw an atm or a lady that would take 20,000 dong off my credit card for some fruit. Take Scotts advice, or google it.

The same limit applys any time you send money over through a wire transfer,, I have wired over 3k at a time and not had to pay a tariff but I did have to pay the transfer fee... The US govt wants to know any big transfers of $ out of the country as well.... its not just an import thing... they are working really hard tracking $ going to terrorist cells... not that there are any in VN.. :bonk:

like was noted in another topic about taking numerous cell phones.. it all depends on who is watching the scanner at the customs check station...

They lowered it to 3 thousand a few years ago. It was the reason that when I went to VN to meet my fiancee that her uncle paid for my plane ticket and I gave him the money after we arrived in VN. He carried the max in a money belt also.

I went to vietnam Dec 2009 and took 5000,00 with me. It stated on the form to be declared if it was over 7000.00 at that time. in 2005 you could bring 3500.00.

Currency: Foreign currency (including cash and travelers’ checks) in excess of US$7,000, cash exceeding Vietnamese Dong (VND) 15,000,000, and gold exceeding 300 grams must be declared at customs upon arrival and departure. There is no limitation on either the export or import of U.S. dollars or other foreign currency by U.S. citizens, provided that all currency in excess of US$7,000 (or its equivalent in other foreign currencies) or in excess of VND 15,000,000 in cash is declared upon arrival and departure, and is supported by appropriate documentation. If excess cash is not declared, it can be confiscated at the port of entry/exit and the passenger may be arrested and/or fined.
