Currency: Foreign currency (including cash and travelers’ checks) in excess of US$7,000, cash exceeding Vietnamese Dong (VND) 15,000,000, and gold exceeding 300 grams must be declared at customs upon arrival and departure. There is no limitation on either the export or import of U.S. dollars or other foreign currency by U.S. citizens, provided that all currency in excess of US$7,000 (or its equivalent in other foreign currencies) or in excess of VND 15,000,000 in cash is declared upon arrival and departure, and is supported by appropriate documentation. If excess cash is not declared, it can be confiscated at the port of entry/exit and the passenger may be arrested and/or fined.

That data was last updated a year ago... go figure.. a US govt site & outdated info... they go hand in hand

Thats old info on that site.. the link I posted was for the VN govt customs office current 2010 guidelines...

Not to change the subject but whats the best way to send money when I go to buy my fiancees and her childrens plane tiickets when the time comes. I thought about sending my attorney money through paypal so she can get them but i'm not sure if he would pay a fee or have to claim a large amount of money on taxes or any other charges? I use ABC money xfers to send money to her because they give her american money with a charge to me of about $4.50 per $100 U.S dollars.

Go to a VN market if there are any in your neighborhood and see if they have a service... many use Saigon Central Post Inc and they deliver cash US dollars the next day which is the same night here... I think I pay 1 or 2 %...

I went to vietnam Dec 2009 and took 5000,00 with me. It stated on the form to be declared if it was over 7000.00 at that time. in 2005 you could bring 3500.00.

http://www.vietnamvisaexpert.com/Vietnam-custom-regulations/

I went to srv a few months ago, and last year as well, and the declaration form said the same thing. the form could be old i guess, but i was never asked how much $$$ i had either time i went.

i attached a copy of the declarations form, in case you plan to bring other items too.

if you call reputable travel agents, then they probably have correct info. if not, they'd get an earful from those whom they tell wrong info to. if you're worried, just take $3k, but, most likely, if right before you go, you check with the travel agent, and they say $7k is okay, then you'd be okay with $7k.
