If not done , Last Name change in passport , downside?

What are the downside of not getting the last name change in passport after marriage? In any way will it slow down the I-130 process or will it make things complicated in future travels? Just want to know so I don't need to rush (if I can) to get last name change (I have Indian passport presently) after getting married later this year.

2nd question related to the same is how long it will take to get the last name change done in US and how much approx. would that cost?

Your green card will be issued in the name in your passport. Not sure what the fee would be to get it changed.

just remember, the police certiicate must be in all names used, married and maiden. If you don't change your name then it is not an issue.

However, if you do plan on changing your name, it is loads cheaper to do it before you arrive in the US as changing the name in the green card is frustrating, time consuming, and expensive

Definitely cheaper to change it before your green card is issued as it will cost $370 to apply for a new green card due to name change through a I-90 application!

Not at all! Many women choose to keep their maiden names and it is not an issue at all. I believe for air travel you need to book your tickets in the name on your identification but that isn't really a problem, No issues for taxes either. Do what is comfortable for you. Good luck!

I just want to clarify one point. Not all countries issue a Police Certificate in ALL names used. As an example, the United Kingdom issues the ACPO Police Certificate in only one name, the name on your Passport.

You can check the Note on Page 2 of the ACPO application form

You are required however, to provide all prior names used on the application form so the police can do a thorough and complete background check.

Some countries like Canada will print all names ever used on the Police Certificate, other countries may print a note stating "All names used have been cleared" and still other countries only issue the Police Certificate in one name (the name on your passport).
