Men of "Higher Standing" eh? So this status symbol involves the collect of women for the purpose of appearances. Does the man of "Higher Standing" actually place any emotional value in these women or are they simply commodities to be traded and dispensed with when they are no longer interesting?

actually, quite the opposite is true, in my witness. men who can afford to have lovers grow very attached to them, whether they have 1, or 5. there is an old chinese saying; "marry the woman who loves you, and keep the woman you love." this has been custom in china and most other eastern countries for thousands of years. it is their way of life. they view lovers as "wild flowers" and wives as "garden fruit (food)". the wives are necessary to the sustinance of life, and the lovers are held to be admired for their beauty and near uselessness. their only use is in the "making of tea", which you have to be eastern to understand the principles behind the art of.

really, you should let go of your western prejudices for just a moment and learn a little about the eastern mindset. it is how more than half the world's population thinks.

It may be fine for your culture and I respect that. It's not acceptable in mine. By this philosophy of how the majority thinks, Obama was the best choice to lead the US because he received the majority of the votes, but we certainly know that you would never agree with that.

Concubines are not prostitutes, but even so, this division of women is repugnant. What you are describing is a society where woman had no ability to create their own wealth and were considered 'commodities' so yes, they were not exactly being held in high regard - had no direct power and were totally dependent on their benefactor, yes, that sound reasonable, whether or not the man of high standing had his favourites.

As far as the modern version is concerned,as it is not legal in China and women caught prostituting themselves are treated like scum I find your happy picture of Chinese prostitutes as economic power houses somewhat fantastic.

Assuming the men were after "one thing" and you were using them to get things you wanted, is the only difference that you didn't agree on a price and exchange currency or are you on the moral highground because you weren't "technically" selling yourself for money?

What I see a lot of is women driving around yellow cars and giving rides to various men but instead of "running the meter" they simply go out to dinner, have their light bill paid, get a free cell phone, etc., in exchange for that ride. Somehow, they claim to be "better" than the taxi because they don't have their fee prominently displayed on the door.

Do you guys honestly see relationships as a series of manipulative negotiations with one side trying to get 'one over' on the other all the time (some of you even keeping score to see who is 'winning'?) I have to say, that's quite extraordinary and I am glad I don't have to communicate with the people I know in this way, that would be terrifically exhausting.
