Can you use a different I-20 after the documents are submitted to consultate but prior to the visa interview?

I have a visa interview on July 27th. I got the interview date based on the I-20 I received from one school, who accepts student on M1 visa. Before 5 working days from the visa interview date, I will be submitting my documents such as I-20, passport copy etc.

I have also applied in another college, whose I-20, I expect to receive before the visa interview but after I submit the documents. This college accepts the students for the same program on F-1 visa (not the M1 visa).

My question is:

- When I go for the interview, can I ask the consular officer to give me F-1 visa on the 2nd college instead of M1 visa on the first college?

- If not, what should I do in this condition, if my preference is to go to the 2nd college.

Any suggetion/advice you can provide will help me a lot.

thank you in advance.

yea I think thats possible if you get your I20 from other college before your interview, also check with VFS they should give you right direction.

I know that if embassy gives your F1 visa based on I20 of college ABC then you have to join the ABC college atleast for first semester and then you can get a transfer to another college of your liking.

So its good to get F1 of the college where you would want to study.

If you do not join the college whose F1 was stamped, automatically revokes your F1 and you lose the status. Not many ppl are aware of this but its the rule.

Thank you Harsh for your prompt response. Would there be any issue with changing from M1 visa to F1 visa during the interview?

So you want to attend an interview for an M1 visa but ask to change it to an F-1 visa with a new I-20? All you can do is ask. They may have you reschedule the interview but they may be cooperative. I think asking is perfectly reasonable.

Make sure you bring ties to India when attending the interviews

Good luck

What schools are they? It's unusual that one school's program is M/vocational and the same one at another school is F/academic.
