A little tidbit about Huey Lewis & the News: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

You'll have to ask Patrick Bateman to stop. It's not our fault.

hmm, not sure. I haven't heard from him in years. Not sure if he's ever coming back. He sure was fun though.

The story goes that Phil witnessed a drowning when he was young. After becoming famous he bought the culprit a ticket and free ride to his concert at which point he sung this song to the culprits face. It supposedly happened when Phil was just a teenager. Phil played a major mind game on the dude and apparently the bad guy killed himself shortly afterward. The bad guy never realized there was a witness.

If you listen to the lyrics they are quite eerie. Lyrics of songs very often have to do with the artists experiences.

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord

Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand

I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am

Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes

So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been

It's all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord

Well I remember, I remember, don't worry, how could I ever forget

It's the first time, the last time we ever met

But I know the reason why you keep your silence UP, oh no you don't fool me

Well the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows

It's no stranger to you and me

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh lord

Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord, oh lord

Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord

I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord, oh lord, oh lord

And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord, oh lord

And I can feel it in the air tonight, Oh Lord...

I've been waiting for this moment, all my life, Oh Lord, Oh Lord

In '87, Huey released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". The song's so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about... the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

That's just about as much as I can take. I'm off to sleep, where I face certain nightmares featuring Huey Lewis, various members of the News, Phil Collins and possibly Black Lace, all in squirmworthy stages of dishabille.
