It comes down to how much influence should the government have in the economy and business vs. how much influence should the government have in peoples personal lives, in what they can or can't do or what they can get access to.

It's a distinction without a difference. Financial control is control.

Humans give names to anything and everything. Sort of making sense of all the chaos. You might criticize labelling but it does give a common point of reference when talking about something, even if its not completely accurate. I guess on the other hand, labels can be used to dismiss someone entirely.

If it is used as a common point of reference, but more often than not in American poltics such labeling is used simply to jerk someone off. It's pointless - as well as frighteningly inaccurate a lot of the time.

Progressives like labels. That way they don't have to change the facts, just change the labels.

Here we go, progressive being used as an insult. How long did that take?

It could have gone the other way, but in my opinion, progressive is used as an insult more than conservative, but both are used in that way. How helpful.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

Why do you find being called a Progressive insulting? I thought only Liberals felt that way. I don't know any Conservatives that have a problem being referred to as such, no matter how much bile the word brings up in your mouth.

But its not financial control. We are not talking a planned economy like Cuba or the Soviet Union. Instead the questions deal with what sort of presences and influence the government has in the economy. Putting a tariff on a particular commodity does not control the market like the government telling a company to make x number of widgets.

Who is calling me 'progressive' for me to find it personally insulting? What I clearly said was that in the US anything that can be identified with being left of center is thrown out as an insult as a matter of course. Why would conservatives worry about being referred to as 'conservative' when there are very few negative associations connected with it? My only explanation is that for ordinary Americans the legacy of the cold war is an aversion to anything that has any association with communism, no mater how tenuous that connection might be hence why all those who would prefer a more right leaning president like to label Obama as a socialist when quite clearly he is no such thing.

But that's just distinctions in the level of control. All I am saying is that if the government is allowed to control the economy, it can control a lot beyond that. That's simply because taxing something a sufficient amount is paramount to outlawing it.
