There should be some medals only given to people who die in combat or deceased combatants. And there should be medels for those who show valor, courage, etc and live to tell about it over a pint, also.

Saving the lives of half a dozen men in his own unit deserves the recognition

 And rightly so.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Who is the greater hero? The Forrest Gump type that saves his buddies but takes a bullet in the head and dies on the spot or the same guy who takes one in the neck leaving him a quadriplegic for life?

I hope the White House does the right thing and honors the bravery of this serviceman.

I hope they do it, if facts dictate, and do it because it is justified and not for a political feather. To do otherwise would severely diminish the reputation of the award and be a disgrace to those who have earned the medal in the past and those who earn it in the future.

Note: Not sure how much the WH has to do with it besides presenting the medal...

There are two distinct protocols for awarding the Medal of Honor. The first and most common is nomination by a service member in the chain of command, followed by approval at each level of command. The other method is nomination by a member of Congress (generally at the request of a constituent) and approval by a special act of Congress. In either case, the Medal of Honor is presented by the President on behalf of the Congress.
