Hey, this is our first post here, though we've been lurking here and reading the FAQs since before we filed the I-129F back in April. This site is beyond awesome. My fiancee, Samantha, from Texas, set up this account, and I'm Alan, from Scotland, posting on her behalf because internet access isn't easy for her. We got our Petition approved on the 31st of July, and I'm waiting for the packages from the London Embassy just now. So, uh, hi

Neither of us are very well off. I'm a university graduate who hasn't found meaningful employment yet, she will be finishing school when I get to the States and we can support each other. But we're both lucky to have supportive and financially comfortable families, members of whom are acting as co-sponsors for our Affadavit. However, Samantha recently had a medical emergency and had to have surgery. She's now getting hit with hospital bills of US$15,000, with no medical insurance. The question is, if she now gets Financial Aid from the state to help pay this off, and/or files for bankruptcy, how is this going to affect our application? Does Samantha's finances become irrelevant to the application when she nominates a co-sponsor?

They are only interested in the sponsor or co-sponsor's income, not debts. They don't even ask for debt information on any forms.

She is a USC and is entitled to any financial aid, it's the sponsored immigrant who cannot become a public charge.
