A television advert giving advice on unplanned pregnancy and explaining how to get an abortion will be aired for the first time next week.

Channel 4 will show the commercial, paid for by the Marie Stopes organisation, next Monday, well past the watershed at 10.10pm.

The advertisement from the UK's leading provider of sexual health services outside the NHS is part of a campaign aimed at breaking one of society's last taboos.

"Research indicates that 42% of adults have no idea where to go - apart from their GP - for specialist advice about an unplanned pregnancy, even though one in three women in the UK will have an abortion in their lifetime," the charity's Judy Douglas told Sky News Online.

The subject is still not always openly or honestly discussed, Marie Stopes argues, saying it is time to improve public understanding to help women become more confident and informed when it comes to sexual health.

"Abortion has been legal in this country for more than 40 years and we believe it is time to open up the debate," Ms Douglas said.

"Sex education is very patchy and mixed messages are often sent out. Keeping things under wraps is part of the British culture so it's time to improve things."

Dana Hovig, Marie Stopes International's CEO, said: "Last year alone we received 350,000 calls to our 24-hour helpline.

"Clearly there are hundreds of thousands of women who want and need sexual health information and advice, and access to services.

"Marie Stopes International provides such support in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

"We hope the new 'Are you late?' campaign will encourage people to talk about their choices, including abortion, more openly and honestly."

Figures for 2008 indicate nearly 216,000 abortions were carried out in the UK.

Not everyone thinks the advert is a good idea. Anti-abortion campaign Pro Life does not approve.

"The purpose of an abortion commercial is clearly to 'sell' abortion and it will not provide full information about foetal development, the abortion procedure itself, the health risks which abortion poses for women, let alone the alternatives to abortion," the charity said.

"This is hardly conducive to making the 'informed sexual health choices' which Marie Stopes claims to provide."

Yeah, I'm sure that's the aim of the advert to 'encourage' women to have abortions  Yeah, Marie Stopes is such a fringe organization, well known for their pro abortion stance - WE NEED MORE ABORTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!

What I find interesting is, unlike the US, medical ads hardly EVER run on TV.

I think ads for prescription medication are illegal, I've certainly not seen any here.

UK does seem to have a lot ambulance chaser / personal Injury ads these days. That stuff should be illegal IMO.

Perhaps it will. So what?

As long as informed decisions are made, that's surely the most important thing for individuals - everyone else's personal opinion is irrelevant.

Informed decision no, I think whats important is that they make the right decision. Extreme cases aside, abortion will never be the right decision.

I vote for getting the accidental daddy baby makers fixed so if there's consequences for them, they will think twice about their actions! And no repeat performances to boot until they get reversed. That sounds like doing the right thing to me.

I've about had it with American commercials telling me if I get pregnant unexpectedly they can help me, impartially (hmph!), with "choices I can live with". It's funny how people go on and on and on about getting government interference out of their lives, power to the individual but these same people ready to tell me in a heart beat what I can and can't do with my body.

The right decision being one that conforms to your prejudice, not what is right for the individual involved of course.

That's the point about 'choice'. The choice is entirely that of the women who is pregnant, which is as it should be. Women should not be held solely responsible for the consequences of the decision to have recreational sex. If you think they should be, then you are one sick individual or perhaps you believe that sex is not a recreational activity?

The abortion issue is an uncrossable canyon. On one side, the rights of the mother are more important, on the other side the childs. Neither side can agree on a definition of when human life begins and therefore neither can agree when human rights come into play. The only aspect that both sides agree on is that less abortions should occur.

Of course on the other side of the coin, men have no choice and are expected to pay child support even if they didn't want a child.
