Interview date in Guayaquil

After calling the VIS twice and emailing the consulate, we were able to get an interview date for July 1st. So on May 11th my fiance (the beneficiary) was told that July 1st is the soonest we can get the interview. Should I believe this is true and be fine with it or should I bug them and try to get a closer date? I (the petitioner) really need to get back to the states asap to find a job and find a place for us to live after being in Ecuador the last two years. Being a school teacher, this is the best time to look for a job although I know it's really tough right now. I will stay here until after the interview, but just feeling the pressure to get back asap. I would appreciate any insight you may have into the assignment of interview dates in Guayaquil (maybe if summer is a busy time for interviews, or maybe I'm just being a little psychotic)

The issue of changing the interview date was discussed in this thread.

I don't know though if they would let you move the date up, but if they told you that that was the quickest slot available I assume that that is correct. I suppose you can keep calling them but that will get expensive, with the $12 fee. If you have the money, why not go back to the United States now to look for a job and get a place to live and then return to Ecuador for the interview, or alternatively you could return to the United States immediately after the interview and your fiancee could follow a couple of months late. Also, be careful to not let your visa expire in Ecuador...I don't know what type of visa you have but if it is a tourist visa, you can only be in Ecuador for 90 days per year. As another poster has learned it can be very expensive to leave Ecuador if you overstay, not to mention that you will be hit with a ban barring you from returning to Ecuador for a number of months.

July 1st may be the earliest date available but I think it would be worth an e-mail and/or phone call to make sure that they don't have anything earlier. You can see by my timeline that we were able to get a fairly quick interview (once they FINALLY let us schedule one) but it may be different now because of more applications, but it is worth a shot. Our lawyers were able to get our date so if you are using lawyers maybe they could help, if not, why not try. Worst case would be that they say no and you have to wait until July 1st, best case they move it up. Good luck!

Si, man; summer is busy, but they'll use any excuse to delay & put you off. From May 11 until July 1 is not a long time, really. If you're that concerned, pay yet another $12, call back, see what the rip-off appointment-setting chica says, then ask for her supervisor to see if you get a more flexible answer. I wouldn't bother.

I will stay here until after the interview
This is the key action -- and be certain that you're in Guayaquil a full day before the scheduled interview, in case the consulate calls to change your appointment time "which you must comply with or else." In addition to the good advice above from the others, I caution you NOT to presume issuance of the visa. If a 221g is slapped on you, you'll be in Ecuador a lot longer than you planned -- or you'll have to return to Ecuador on the consulate's schedule (your job in the U.S. notwithstanding) for the Stokes interview.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Did they really call and move your interview up one day? Has this been pretty common with Ecuador? It would not be very cool if they change our interview date after I have bought my ticket. I am only going to have a couple of days in Ecuador because of work.

They did it to another VJ couple. Luckily, they were already in Guayaquil. Do not trust these bastards as far as they deserve to be kicked.

Thanks all for your replies. I appreciate your experience and advice. I did call back just to give it a shot. The guy at the phone center said it wasn't possible to move the interview date up. After also speaking with his supervisor, it was confirmed that it could not be changed. Oh well, it was worth a shot. I will continue to apply for jobs from here since returning to the states before the interview isn't an option (can't swing it financially). My visa for Ecuador isn't an issue since I have it through my job here. Until then we'll make sure we've got our ducks in order and hope for a positive outcome. Thanks again for your ideas and advice:)

All you can do is call back, hope that someone "better" can help you, or ask for a supervisor, or (if all else fails) ask to speak with an AMERICAN. Dealing with this hellhole is absolutely the worst part of the immigration process. However, whatever the demands of your position, you MUST attend the FIRST interview or the visa WILL be refused.

Ok. . . I decide to email the consulate to the email address on the website, in detail, I described work responsibilities and my strong desire to support my fiance on this day and gave them my vacation period, I am emailed back within 24 hours with an interview date within my vacation period as I requested in the email!?!?!?

The interview date they gave me is 3 weeks sooner than the time that people on the phone told me to call back!

UNREAL. . . I hope that this is a ligit date!!!! I can not believe the difference in time!

The "job" of the phone people, it seems, is to stall and be unhelpful. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to learn that they earn commissions for how many times they make you call back. Also, I'm surprised that the consulate was responsive. If you have it in print, keep the e-mail safe and bring it with you. Important: Be in Guayaquil a full 24 hours before the stated interview time, in case the consulate calls and tries to blackmail you into an earlier appointment.
