I suggest viewing "The Fog of War". Former Defense Secretary, Robert McNamara, has a few things to say about the reasons for dropping the bomb. In fact, many in the U.S. Defense Department knew the Japanese were about to surrender; especially after the Americans had fire-bombed many Japanese cities. The nuclear bomb, some say, was really a display for the Russians.

And, Mr McNamara makes an interesting comment that if America lost the American-Japanese War, that they (ie the U.S. Chiefs) would have been tried as war criminals.

Robert Macnamara? Wasn't he the policy maker for the conflict in Vietnam?

Indeed he was. However, he spells out his errors in that conflict. He wasn't the sole policy maker though. It is revealed in this documentary how there was confict between him and the Joint Chiefs, and your President Johnson. Apparently, the Gulf of Tonkin incident never even happened, and it was used as an excuse to enter the conflict.

The world won? No, rather, America secured access to scarce resources, and we are a global marketplace for their goods/services ie Slaves to the dominant producers. The Chinese are next.

Hmmm ohh yeah I forgot it was just America vs Japan .. doh .. silly me I thought it was WW II.. Not trying to be mean .. but it was not just the US it was many others

World War Two had many theatres of conflict. In the Pacific, it was known as the American-Japanese War. Europe was another theatre altogether. However, in this thread, we are discussing what happened in the Pacific.

It must have changed while I wasn't looking I thought it was talking about the anniversary of the atomic bombs which ended world war II .. Either way to each their own.

I want to correct this to the point that I meant Allies and not just Americans. My father was in the So Pacific in WW2....he would never want the forget the valient Aussies, Kiwis, Brits, Canadians, etc. that fought along side the US in this war.

Sorry but it looks like the thread doesn't want to remember the efforts of the other countries. I myself will never forget what sacrifices everyone made.

You need to do some research ~ read a book.

The atomic bombs did not end World War 2; rather it ended the War in the Pacific. The War in Europe had already ended months before, when the Russians reached Berlin (and they didn't refer to it as "World War 2"). In fact, the Americans were planning to reallocate American soldiers from Europe to fight in the planned invasion of Japan.

Does history stop referring to World War 2 as "World War II" after the Germans were defeated and rename it as "The war in the Pacific"? Because I've never heard that before. Therefore, when the war in the pacific ended, that's when I'd say World War II ended. Unless there was some other part or the conflict still going on after that...

its in the air what you want to call it Identity .. I have read books.. I will admit I don't know everything.. especially since I was not alive during that time.. it was not over the US was not the only one that signed the Potsdam Declaration .. so therefor there was more then just the US involved..

Like I said call it what you want.. but how can you call the End of WWII before the fighting was done..

If say I was fighting you .. one on one .. and I told you "the fight is over" but then you or I was still going after the other .. is the fight over?

YOUR history refers to it as "World War 2". Ask any Russian what they know about that war. To them, it's called 'The War with Germany'. The war in Europe was won because of Russia. But the Americans don't see it that way.

won because of Russia.....it was won in spite of Russia would be more accurate.

They had made a separate non-agression with Hilter on how to divide up Poland etc. until it backfired in their face.

Dont think that you want to tell a Brit that WW2 was won because of Russia.

stupid!!

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

And what do the European allies refer to it as - "The war Russia won for us"?

What's the point? That the US is no better than Israel or any of the terrorist groups?

What are you saying, you agree with that statement?

No... I'm asking a question, then "shaking my head"!

I want to hear what the right-wing republican, defender of the US military, and slayer of terrorists, mr america himself has to say.

So why would you or your bride continue / decide to live in the big bad US??

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
