Paying Canadian Taxes from US account

Hey all

Our accountant totally slacked and I'm finally writing out the cheque to pay my Canadian Taxes.

So he says I can write it from my US account and they'll draw up the money and send us a the difference...

Like say we owe $1,000 Canadian.

He's saying write a cheque from our US account like usual for $1,000 (and not to write CANADIAN FUNDS on it since the law has changed and they can't deposit it if it says that)....

and then Revenue Canada will do a currency conversion and send us back the difference?

I can't find my canadian cheque book! hence the mess.

Pretty sure CRA won't be able to cash an American cheque any easier then you or I could cash a Cdn one down here. I paid my Cdn taxes using an International Money order from the Post Office...it's still in US funds so I looked at the current exchange rate to estimate (they can't do them in foreign currency). So yes...CRA would cash the moeny order and convert it into Cdn funds. They might send you the difference depending on the ammount....mine was deposited into my existing Cdn account that I've always used for direct deposit from them.

My student loan is still in Canada, so we just left it there. We send my parents an american check and it is perfectly fine, although keep this in mind: for example, when we send my mom a check for $1,000 - depending on the dollar, it'll show up on our account as $1,000, but it'll show up on my student loan as $1025.00.

I've worked in both Canadian and American banks. Canada is very quick to take an American check without an problem, American refuses to!!! The old American bank I worked for was ridiculous about it saying it wasn't a "real" check. Silly Americans ;) lol

Hope that helps! What about an international money order?

I stand corrected, this is good info to know. After my American bank experiences trying to cash a Cdn cheque or exchange $$$$ for trips...I gave up on them and go with an international money order everytime.

  • 3 weeks later...

UPDATE:

Guess what. It took Canada only 17 days (INCLUDING weekends) to cash the cheque from our American Bank account for my Canadian taxes. Looks like they really will always find a way to get our money... awesome.

Lol, CRA will take all and any money you give them. Getting anything back will be a very long wait though.
