If people accused me of being gay, I would laugh and say nothing. It's no one's business, and I'm not going to defend rumours, especially when it doesn't matter if they're true or not.

Christian Conservatives have really been grinding my gears lately. I've seen people on my Facebook list delete people for asking why they felt a need to preach all the time, and I've been personally blamed for the problems of the US because I like Obama's policies. I've been told that one day I'll see the light, and have people speculate on why I'm not a Christian anymore, even when I've told them the true reason. I've been told that as long as I believe in God, nothing else matters about my beliefs. This is just the direct impact that they've had on me, and I've also seen it around the country in the news and in protests. Still, I'm just an atheist that's going to Hell so what do I know. :)

To the first part- You are not a famous Christian musician like the person mentioned in this article. It makes a difference.

You don't believe the same thing as Christians, so of course you are not going to agree with them. Some people here are expecting Christians to believe like them, while we have scripture verses that discuss this very issue(along with other issues).

Christians dont find it acceptable to be gay. So yes they would feel the need to defend someone that has been accused of such a serious sin. The few that claim they can still be gay and a Christian are delusional and I often wonder if they ever even read the bible.

Ah, you are the authority on what is and isn't acceptable according to the bible? You and people like you need to take the logs out of your eyes - of course you will not ;)

Mary Glasspool, the First Lesbian U.S. Bishop

art.glasspool.jpg

The Episcopal Church makes history again. Back in 2003, it was the ordination of openly gay Bishop Eugene Robinson that sent waves through the religious world. Now, six years later, the Episcopal Church will welcome its first lesbian ordained bishop with Rev. Mary Glasspool in Los Angeles. Rev. Glasspool, currently an Episcopalian priest in Maryland, was elected bishop over the weekend. She'll become one of two auxiliary bishops for the Los Angeles diocese, joining Rev. Diane Jardine Bruce, who was elected on Friday. The two will become the first women bishops of the entire diocese.

That's quite the feat for Glasspool, who broke two rather large glass ceilings in becoming bishop. Her mission now? Same as it ever was: combatting racism, fighting for gender equity, calling for the inclusion of LGBT people in the Church, and being a leader and pastoral role model for thousands of Episcopalians.

In her letter submitted to the Los Angeles diocese for her candidacy, Glasspool wrote that what guides her spiritual work is the fear that silence will lead to injustice.

"I have been touched and changed the most by issues of gender equity and the status of gay and lesbian people in the church and society," Rev. Glasspool wrote. "Yet I am not a 'single issue' person, and I preach passionately about peace-making, reconciliation, the need to battle the evils of racism, and overcome extreme poverty."

You think all christians believe the same thing on this issue as well?

I think your problem is that you were one of the people who 'defended' her against her detractors and now you feel betrayed. I feel sorry for you. I will pray in my fashion for you to understand your failings and be at peace.

I didn't defend her. I occasionally googled "where is Jennifer Knapp?" because I missed her music, which would lead to forums where people asked that and others posted the rumors while others said I don't think so. I don't even know what to say to the rest of what you wrote because it's quite rude.

To many conservative Christians, homosexuality is interpreted in terms of behavior. A homosexual is any person who engages in same-sex behavior. To most others, including religious liberals, gays, lesbians, human sexuality researchers, and mental health therapists, homosexuality is interpreted in terms of sexual orientation. The term refers to a person who is attracted to persons of the same gender. A homosexual may choose to be celibate, or may be sexually active.

Is it? People feel the need to feel sorry and pray for me sometimes, should I feel that is rude too?

Do you miss her music now you know she is gay?

I find it very rude of you to assume I must be one of the disappointed defenders of hers just b/c I happen to have knowledge of this situation that has been going on and shared to add to the thread.

Lets clarify that - Fundamental Christians don't find it acceptable to be gay. There was a lesbian clergy in the Episcopalian who was recently promoted to bishop or some higher position. There are many Christian churches that accept gays. The Catholic Church allows gays to be ordained clergy provided they follow the tradition of celibacy as other ordained clergy do.

How do they side step what is written in the bible? I dont think your being honest with yourself if you think they can go hand in hand.

No I'm not, but when I was a Christian, I didn't have these homophobic views so I honestly think I wouldn't be touched by silly rumours. I belonged to a small church in England that let people do as they wished, as long as they believed in God/Jesus.

This wasn't an issue of not agreeing with Christians. My issue was the impact they've had on me directly, in my small town area, and this is in the North East where supposedly the Christians aren't so conservative. My MIL works in a Christian school, and she frequently changes what she says and how she acts so that the others don't look down on her. That's no different than a famous Christian musician monitoring what she does/says so she doesn't offend her religious crowd, and I think that's just wrong. We're all human beings, we all do things that aren't perfect, why should we have to hide or defend how we feel?

I don't think you're being honest with yourself if you think that the events of the bible are a factual retelling of events.

There are a lot of things that are written in the Bible, where if you took them literally, you'd find yourself in a real predicament in keeping true to them.

Interesting I didnt see you as one of those people that would try to water down the bible. Are you trying to say that according the bible it isn't a sin? As far as the sarcasm in your response, you can do much better, I have seen it before.

Why do you feel that is rude? You are clearly disappointed in her sexual orientation as it pertains to being able to enjoy her christian music. That's your reality, so why is pointing that out rude?
