I've not taken an honest inventory just yet but we're mostly talking about packing boxes, probably enough to fit in an econoline van, plus some bikes and maybe a set of drawers. Maybe an angry mother in law as well? Oh dear. If its less than the $1600 U-haul is asking for that wouldn't be bad at all.

Remember with UHaul you also have to factor in fuel...and the have horrible fuel economy from what I've heard. Also depending on how long your drive is hotels etc....

We had say 25 totes, a washer and dryer, king size mattress and box spring, some boxes, full size stereo speakers, 2 end tables etc etc.

What we did (that's the royal we - my Husband did this) was to mark an area in our living room, the size of the relocube and mark space for the large items, then brought some totes up to get a feel for how they would stack and how many we could stack etc. That way he had a plan on the day it was packed about where the larger items would go etc - and we were also sure we could get all our stuff in - worked well.

One thing to consider, with the relocube - I don't know what the story is where you are but here in Calgary they deliver the relocube on a flatbed truck trailer and leave that puppy there overnight - they don't just leave the relocube in the driveway like they describe on the website - they say this is due to the weather in Canada. hmm, it was spring. Anyway, in Florida they did just leave the cube in the driveway.

Thank you posting about the ABF upack website. My fiance lives about 5 kilometers away from the ABF terminal so he is planning to borrow a friends truck, take his stuff to the terminal and pack it there and the terminal in the U.S. is about 20 miles away and I can borrow a van to get stuff back that I couldn't borrow to take across the border. So we are doing the terminal-to-terminal delivery and it will be about $449 for six feet of space! No driving and worrying about fuel prices and no towing his car or having to bring someone else with me to bring his car and my car and a moving van back to the States. Yeah! Perfect timing for this post.

Sweet! Over what distance is this move? Mine is from Ontario to California and so they're quoting $2200. Still better then Uhaul tho with gas and all that...

Wow. I hit some huge lucky streak there I tell you. I had my relo-cube picked up and about a week before I left. I had no issues but i think that was just a stroke of good luck!

:)

Did not know about that and wasn't told by the guy/company either.

Whew...

Dodged some trouble there!

I also used ABF Upack, a Relo cube and it was great and the company was awesome. It cost me about 800$ to do the entire move with one cube but that was not bad at all....

I would recommend them for sure.

My fiance' is moving from Kingston, ON (where they have a terminal almost around the corner from his house) to Battle Creek, MI which is about 500 miles. The terminal on the receiving end is about 30 miles away but I can borrow a van to move the things that far that I couldn't take over the border. The quote was $631 plus $17 for "brokerage" fees when my fiance' actually called and talked to the people. Very reasonable. If we used the relocube, it would be a little over $1000 for the same distance. Since we are trying to save money, we figured we would use the terminal-to-terminal delivery in stead of the door-to-door delivery.

We used the online quote "creator" and then my fiance' followed up with a call and even a visit to the local ABF to ask if he could bring his things in on a Sunday (when they are closed). They were willing to work out an "open" trailer" that he can put a paddle lock on and then on Monday do the paperwork and put their paddle lock on.

Yeah, ABF is SUPER accommodating. Would recommend them for sure. I had them do door to door for me and it was 800$ The online quote was how they figured it out.

I'm like Kathryn. I used a commercial mover. When I did a cost comparison I wasn't saving any money to do it myself..... but I was certainly creating a whole lot of hassle. I liked having someone else be responsible for loading and unloading my belongings and getting them there safely. I'm lazy that way. :)

Just called them - looks like I may be out of luck unless they can get someone to drop a container here in Sarnia. They are telling me that the closest facility is in London - about an hour away. Guess we'll see.

Hey I called to get a quote and am going from terminal to terminal at their facility, as we cannot park a trailer in front of either home.

So its over $1000 less if we are willing to hop across the border with our items. Crazy, but it just might work (we're close enough that we can definitely work it out).

I paid about $1700 for them to ship from Kingston Ontario to Orange, CA. did the terminal to terminal to save money and just borrowed a truck for the load/unload. Was cheeper than the Uhaul charge (as I would have had to tow my car too) plus I don't trust Uhaul trucks for anything more than intown from the last time my family moved and we ended up broken down and stuck in Tweed. Check out their little date calendar thing. You can get it cheeper by requesting the truck on say a Thursday than you do on a Monday.

See my review - I scanned and emailed my Visa to them I came on a CR-1 and had to wait until I had crossed the border.

Good luck,

Janet

Hello All,

Moving question for those who have used Upack or those in the know.

I am thinking about using Upack for move from Ottawa to California. Of course I need my successful K1 interview first before I can move the stuff. What I am wondering is as soon as I actually receive the K1 visa in my passport from the consulate, can I send my stuff via upack? Or does Upack/customs need the I-94 or other documents I receive when I actually activate my K1 at the border? helpsmilie.gifunsure.gif

Thanks!
