I agree totally, Divided we fall. Once again I love my country, the USA, and in no way want any kind of seperation. I love every part of this great nation and have stated many times in other threads. I asked that question based on how I percieve people may have thought in the past. Heck, I could probably think that way at the present. If my state and all I know, everyone, and everything I know wanted to seperate, it would be hard for me not to go along with them IF THEY HAD ALREADY SUCCEEDED. Believe you me, I would not want that to happen but that is how I would feel if they did. Again I am not advocating any of this, just trying to think how someone would back then.

Why would I want to go with the rest of the country if all, everyone, and everything I know is going the other direction? In a time of no cars or jets and even the railroad was new, your world was your locality andf one would have to have some super strong beliefs to go against their family and all they know. Just my thoughts for the night. Once again I love the USA and nobody can tell me I don't for thinking this way.

Too many Texans have fought and died for our country to turn our back on it now. There are always a few that say secede now and again. We are OK with them saying it. It will never happen though. If as you say that all of a sudden that a majority did say that and started the process and tried to secede I would never support it and fight them. We did it once but all we did was attach ourselves to another confederation that governed us from far off. Texas could never be as great as it is now if it wasn't for our participation with the union we have with America. Of course we don't like things in Washington many times but we know how to fight that by the ballot box and economics. We are among the most populous state and we have a lot of clout politically in Washington. That is one of the main reasons we get so much money sent back to us. We are very successful in competing with other states in bringing business here also.

Besides if Texas was its own country and with the way we are politically we would be overwhelmed with aliens moving here from the United States. We have enough people here without making it even more attractive. Then we lose our edge we have here. Prefer the status quo we have now. Most here think the same.

Just in case anyone missed what the other Virginia was, in the eyes of the author. No sugar coated glamorizing of Johnny Reb here.

Apparently you're only a traitor if your bid at independence fails.

Just Ask Jefferson and Madison, they were traitors to the Crown which made this country protected this country and had legal rule over it. Who can claim the States had less legal grounds to seek independence?

Slavery existed a lot longer under the US Constitution then if did the Confederacy but she has a warm feeling inside for Jefferson because he wrote "all men are created equal" ... which in no way included Blacks.

I guess most people cling to their parents.... faults and all, and it is this type relationship She can except with US history but not with the Confederacy.

BUt clearly the hypocrisy of embracing one slaver government which scourging another is present in her piece ... at least thats my take.

Haven't you yet learned that history is written by the victors?

The American Revolution and the Civil War are not directly comparable, and the 'just grounds' causus belli of each are not the same. The legal framework in place between England and the colonies in 1776 was not the same as the constitutional framework binding together the United States in 1860, and the opportunities for redress by petitioners was not the same.
