Do I need Re-entry Permit?

Hi everybody.

(Moderator- if this isn't the correct spot, please move. thanks in advance)

My wife had a death in her family last week. She wants to go back to Hong Kong for 1-2 weeks. Does she need a re-entry permit for just 1-2 weeks?

Quick info:

We got marry July 27, 2008. But her green card doesn't expire until next year so I'm assuming we don't need to worry about removing condition.

Any help appreciated. THANKS ALL~~

We're at the process where we will have an interview for my wife 10 year visa. My wife already have her 2 years condition green card and her Social Security #.

A reentry permit is needed once the GC holder leaves the US for more than 1 year. It is valid up to 2 years. So, no, in your case you do not have any use for a reentry permit.

That's good to hear. I was worry about waiting for the re-entry permit to arrive and what not.

So my wife just needs to bring her GC (2 year condition) and her passport? Does she needs to bring any other documents?

She will need her passport for the HK entry - however, only the greencard is required for US entry. So both will be with you anyway.

There are no other documents she should need. (what name is on her passport? does it match the greencard?)

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Hi Bobby+Umit,

I would like to ask if there will be a problem if the green card name doesn't match the passport. My passport is still in my maiden name and my GC is in my married name. Will I be able to travel if this is the case? Thanks for your help.

You shouldn't have problem to enter your country as you don't need to show your GC but only your unexpired/valid passport.
