Obtaining a SSN

As usual, I'm way ahead of myself but have a question for those who've walked this path.

The DS320 asks if you want to apply for the SSN etc. So if one checks that does that mean then that once you cross over the border and have immigrated that an SSN is generated automatically and will be sent to your address - if so how long does that take? I know that people have applied for the SSN's once arriving. Does the immigrant have to go to the SSN office to do anything if the DS230 SSN section is checked off or??

Thanks.

Well - there should be no reason to go to the SSA. (Sometimes, some folks end up doing so if the system fails to generate the SS issuance, which happens sometimes - but you can jump off that bridge if/when you come to it.) :star:

I cant remember if we checked the box on ours or not.. is there any way to find out so that I dont wait the 4 weeks when I get there only to find out that we wasted time?

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

Well if you haven't had your interview yet you can ask them at the interview as they have a copy.

If you haven't received it within 2 weeks, if you did mark it, you should start making inquiries anyway, it's kind of a hit/miss program.

That is a good question, we checked the box. We went the first weekday we could and applied in person for a SSN anyway. They took our application and told us that they had to wait 10 days to make sure and verrfy. That we were in the system and then they would process the application. Either way about 3 weeks passed and we got our SSN card. I kinda figure that it was generated by the original visa application because when we went to get our SSN at the OFFICE they said they would change the last name. But our SSN card came in her maiden name. Either way we were happy and it didnt mess up the system as far as I know.

If it works it will be sent to the address immigration uses to mail the Form

I-551 (Green Card)

Need to allow at least three weeks

Does the immigrant have to go to the SSN office to do anything if the DS230 SSN section is checked off or??

Only if you don't receive your SSN card within three weeks.

If you show up with an immigrate visa, a lot of SSA offices are going to assume you did check off on the DS-230 whether did or not and tell you to come back after you have been here three weeks. They want to keep people from being assigned two numbers.

Easy to find out. Call the SSA 800# and have them look at your SSN record. If your A# is on the record, the SSN came from the DS-230 check off, if it isn't, it came from the one you submitted at the office.

what suppose to happen regarding this matter the uscia should inform the SSN office to issue you a card but most the time it doesnt happn. so you better apply on your own and dont rely on them you have to go to the SSN and apply there good luck

What does a person have to lose by checking off on the DS-230. If it works you get your SSN and card. If it doesn't you go apply after three weeks and as I said, a lot of SSA offices aren't going to take an application from someone with an immigrant visa until sfter three weeks anyway.
