Hi Everyone,

I have a leased vehicle through GMAC and the lease will not be complete until April 2011. So I was looking for two things: the phone/fax/email for GMAC to get compliance letter, and also the question....can I bring over a leased vehicle??? I'm guessing that if we can't than I would have to use it with Canadian tags and licence until lease is up...but I could be totally off!! Any input? Thanks again.

There ought to be contact information on your monthly lease statement. And you can ask them directly or just consult your lease to see if the vehicle can be domicled outside Canada.

We have a financed vehicle through GMAC and per the rep that we spoke to, we are not allowed to import it, so I am going to guess it would be the same with a leased vehicle.

The anser is no. You can not import a leased vehicle. In fact, even if you purchased vehicle it has to be paid off completely before you can import it in the States. I moved here in 2006 and still had a big chunk of payments on my car at the time. I had to come up with money to pay it off. They asked the letter from the bank at the border to confirm that the car is paid off. I hope it helps.

Yeah it's probably in the fine print somewhere. When I went to ask about mine she showed me the fine print that said I wasn't allowed to take the vehicle out of Canada for longer than 30 days if I still owed money on it (I financed).

It's too bad, you'd think the car companies would know how to talk to each other or something.

I think it depends on the financing as far importing a vehicle with a loan as I had one and customs here in Virginia didn't even ask and the DMV just asked for the mailing information of the lien holder. However with a leased vehicle GMAC might not like it leaving Canada as they really would not want to have get it back from you at the end of lease, but it can't hurt to ask them.

This is correct. You can't expect that you can take a vehicle that doesn't belong to you, to another country. If you must have this particular car, you'll odds are have to arrange a buyout and have a document proving the vehicle has no liens.
