They've changed it now to include spouses of military or former military (including widows and widowers) and through parent. Once you're "in" you're "in" and so is your family. Now I just need to get my husband to give me his details. My personal fave is the NO charges for ATM's ANYWHERE. That's what I love :)

It's apparently got the best rates also for car insurance and home insurance etc. Here's the eligibility page: https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/McStaticPages?key=pub_eligibility_task_entry

correct, but as i recall, danno has been in the military, which is why i answered with just that specific requirement.

That's silly. Would you spend $1000 to get $10 back?

It used to be impossible to rent a car with a debit card - only credit. Not to

mention that most credit cards include collision coverage for rental vehicles;

if you use a debit card, you have to purchase it separately.

There have been studies done...I know I read that McDonald's did a study and people spent about 50% more when they used a credit card versus cash. It's not the big-ticket items, but the smaller stuff that adds up over time. When future hubby gets here I'll probably add him to my credit card for a few years so that he can get a good credit score and we can purchase a house together because underwriting a mortgage isn't feasible in our situation--we'll be moving in a few years, but if not for that I would get rid of the card forever. Though I haven't been caught in any bad traps with credit cards, I've heard too many horrible stories to put any faith whatsoever in them.

I've never had a problem renting a car using my debit card...the rental companies seem to be more interested in the fact that I'm not 25 yet and want to charge me extra monies despite my clean record. I have USAA car insurance and they cover rental car collisions; in fact I paid about $150 a year for awhile when I didn't have a car at all so that I could drive anyone's car or a rental car without worrying about collision coverage.

I have one credit card that I use for big ticket items and real estate purchases. For everything else, including travel and online purchases, I've used a debit card for the last ten years with no problems. A bank that wants your business badly enough will take care of you.

You buy real estate on a credit card?

:rofl:

Bollocks.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.
