Either way, they simply don't apply in this current economic climate where there are 6 to 7 people per available job.

a huge part of the problem IMO in tihs country is that people arent willing to move to where the jobs are. the recession isnt "unform" across the country some regions are doing better than others. but we've become a complacent and lazy people unwilling to take chances. which is ironic given that our largest source of population growth is due to a group of people who willingly take on huge disruptions in their lives in the hope for something better .. immigrants.

I noticed that only immigrants seem show up at the hiring tables, or stand out there, everyday, rain or shine, looking for work.

Best I can find. I am not that far off:

In 2008, 38.5% are unemployed for 15 weeks, or longer. In 2009, that number jumped to 53.6%

So your saying people have been lazy in the last two years? Not that, well you know, massive layoffs coupled with suppressed hiring might of...you know...contributed?

I forget the stats, but something like the largest group of beneficiaries collect 6 to eight weeks of benefits before finding a job. The second largest group, and the group that accounts for like 80% of the benefits paid, collect like 20 weeks or more, exhausting their benefits before getting a job.

See what stats are worth - I would fall into the second group actually exhausting the benefits before I finally found a suitable position for which I had to move to another state. And it wasn't for a lack of trying. I applied for dozens of positions, interviewed for a number and then ended up having two offers - both outside the state I resided in at the time - that I could choose from. It was a matter of timing - the last quarter is usually not the best time to be looking for a job as many companies go into hiring freeze mode towards the end of the year.

There seems to be two classes of folks that get unemployment. The ones like you that find they can't manage their lives on unemployment, and get off it as soon as they can. But, there is also a class of folks that find a way to manage just fine. Those are the folks that work just long enough to qualify for benefits again.

I am sad so say, too many of my "friends" still live that latter lifestyle.

Maybe you need some new friends. Stop hanging around with dope smoking hippies, Bill :P

Not easy in new home construction when the market is overflowed with foreclosers. Not easy either in automotive electronics when the three major domestic auto makers decided to outsource from China. Not easy even as a waitress when people can no longer to afford to eat out or any kind of recreational enterprise.

Easy when in office to live very well when all you have to do is to raise taxes and take bribes.

He's from California, what else is there? Californians are lazy and stupid, that's why companies like Google and Facebook and Myspace and HP and Intuit and Intel and Cisco are all headquartered in hard working god fearing red states like Mississippi.
