Politics destroys the purity of any good idea. Even before you get to the stage whre you have to negotiate with the opposition, you have to reconcile it within your own party. Special interest groups and political action committes rape any forward thinking legislature that is to their detriment, even if it is to the greater benefit of the country. Sad really.

Now, Detroit is in the sad state that it is in because it has been holding onto an economic model that has failed, and was bound to fail. The auto industry has been losing money for decades, yet continued to perpetuate the same plan. The Obama administrations bailout of the auto industry was a poorly crafted idea. I think the entire bailout was a poorly thought out plan. Good idea, but poorly executed with no measurement or oversight mechanism involved.

I definitely agree there. Well loo, it all depends on who you vote in. People here need to look past the song and dance, look past the image, and actually think about the candidate and their experience.

The other issue that is clear to me is that Repubs in this country simply do not want to invest in the country and only want to invest in the military. Furthermore, the mentality that the private sector is the best to decide our fate or quality of life is absolutely ridiculous. The private sector will not touch something unless it is profitable period. Rightfully, that is their job.

Our government's job on the other hand should be to represent what is in the best interest of 'We the People'.

As I pointed out to Gary in another thread regarding health care, state and local planning regulations in Aus mandate any new community be focused around promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. Naturally, this means added costs for the developed but it also means that they cannot simply build something on the cheap, to score them a huge profit, and then leave. They have to install sidewalks and street lamps and also build community rec areas (small parks) for families to be able to use and enjpy. Win win for all actually and does not cost the tax payer a single dollar. Heck, in new communities they are even installing grey-water networks to ensure only this water is used to water the grass or flush the toilet, with the limited fresh water reserved for the other things.

Someday, USA MIGHT adopt OZ's legalization of brothels.

Until that happens, though - I don't see any point in a 'red light district' for strip clubs, IMO it's a thinly veiled front for prostitution. Legalize the brothels in USA, lets make this topic done and over, ya?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Just like what Australia did with the indigenous population that was there before you crims showed up a couple hundred years ago?

Yeah those poor saps. After all, prior to the British showing up, their civilization was going places..

Wow. Who are YOU to pass judgment on the passive evolution of another culture...particularly one that was quietly doing its own thing before foreign invaders showed up and imposed their way of life upon some, and committed genocide on others.

I'll go so far as to say that there's a point where one has to say, "What's done is done, what's past is past." But there's a difference between moving on from a shameful past conflict and still believing said conflict wasn't a bad thing...

War is apart of our history. The difference is that you don't see anyone else crying daily about it, apart from certain key groups.

Ultimately doing so does nothing to change the present.
