On Tuesday, the school board will consider sending notices to teachers, counselors and social workers that they could be laid off at the end of the school year, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported.

By law, teachers must be notified of possible layoffs by March 15.

The school board recently eliminated $38 million in spending to balance the district's budget, and class sizes may increase next year.

District officials anticipate sending layoff warnings to about 470 elementary teachers, 41 middle school teachers and 145 high school teachers, the newspaper reported. Actual layoffs, however, could be avoided, depending on retirements and resignations, district officials told the Press-Telegram.

About 30 counselors and 11 social could get layoff notices also.

The school board is scheduled to meet in open session at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Community Room at LBUSD headquarters, 1515 Hughes Way in Long Beach.

Thats so great !!! Perhaps now, that school district will suffer from lower educational outcomes.

One can hope.

What's the bet Steve still champion on paying for illegal aliens? Even as school district after school district has massive budget shortfalls.

I honestly need to write a book regarding this. How even when Americans' own quality of life took a massive hit, there were people who actually still supported paying the $10K per child (per year) required to fund the education of a student that is an anchor-baby or one of illegal status. Screw the reality that Californian school performance is ranked in the bottom five, when compared to the other 50 states in the union.

As I also said before, the US was ranked in the bottom five in science, maths and comprehension when compared with other OECD nations and that was prior to the crisis. Therefore, where will it end up now? Victorian, AUS schools just had a $800 million dollar budget increase.

You believe their budget deficit is from what?

Steve it isn't rocket science. With the cost to educate a child per year being $10K, even 150,000 kids that are illegal aliens or anchor-babies would cost the taxpayer $1.5 billion annually to educate. Where is this money coming from? As I have calculated for you before using California's tax rate, illegal aliens or parents of anchor-babies would have to spend close to $120K per annum to pay for (offset) the cost of educating one child. This increases substantially with two to four kids; which many have. Since we all know that there is no chance they are earning or spending anywhere near that, the money that would be allocated to teach American kids, now has to be redistributed to also pay for the aforementioned kids. Basically, the taxpayer is forced to use the same budget to pay for educating more kids. While the property boom was happening, we could hide (make-up) for these costs. Unfortunately the chickens have now come home to roost and California, like other places plagued with illegal aliens and anchor-babies, is financially screwed.

I am not saying they are to blame but it's disingenuous and immoral to ignore the reality of the huge financial burden due to them placed on school districts. This unfair cost is why there is zero chance that either of the two (anchor or illegal) would be educated in any Australian school. Also the reason why Australia is ranked first in the world in terms of the education index, furthermore, with test scores in the fields mentioned above being ranked in the top seven. as I have said before, the rest of the developed first world is not stupid to have zero tolerance for illegal immigration and anchor-babies. Without such tough stances, they too would be a South Central and so on.

Setting aside your argument about the cost of illegals to school budgets, Long Beach Unified is feeling the pinch from the state's ongoing fiscal crisis. And that problem stems from the Recession. So really, the solution lies somewhere in there, as to what to do about it.

Despite lean times, the Long Beach Unified School District’s credit rating remains high because of careful management.

Standard & Poor’s recently assigned a high AA-/Stable rating to the district. Such high ratings help to save taxpayers millions of dollars in bond interest. Local voters in 2008 approved $1.2 billion in bonds for school modernization and construction.

The high rating doesn’t eliminate LBUSD’s budget woes. The school district still must cut about $90 million more from its budget because of the state’s ongoing fiscal crisis. But S&P’s opinion shows that the school district continues to live within its increasingly limited means.

“The stable outlook reflects our expectation that the district will maintain good reserve levels despite expected revenue decreases resulting from reduced state revenue sources,” S&P stated.

Standard & Poor’s is known to investors as a leader in financial market information. S&P also maintains the S&P 500, one of the most widely followed indices of American stocks.

Not denying that the economy has to do with budget shortfalls, after all we are in a recession. As a result of the economy, now is the time to trim any excess fat, therfore, rather than allow Americans and those here legally to bear the brunt, it's time Californian school districts say enough is enough. That they will no longer pay for the education of those that are illegal aliens, rather, the funds should be rightfully used to educate Americans.

Furthermore, it's time the constitution is amended as it has been in pretty much every other first world country, to prevent people from exploiting the system and rushing here to have their baby, in order for them to be granted citizenship.
