WHAT??? Nutella is made different here? Son of a ....!!! I used to buy it at Trader Joe's. But I've been avoiding anything using trans fats (hydrogenated oils - nasty stuff). I'd sure like to know why the hell Nutella doesn't provide the same quality version here that they sell in Europe. I feel jipt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutella#Ingredients

The European (Poland) ingredients are: sugar, rapeseed oil, hazelnuts(13%), cocoa(7,4%), skimmed milk(5%), lactose, soya lecithin, vanillin. The US ingredients are: sugar, peanut oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skimmed milk, reduced mineral whey, partially hydrogenated peanut oil, soy lecithin, vanillin.

Hm Aldi's concept is to have their own brand stuff, and not too much stuff in stock and not too many different brands because that is expensive. They keep their prices low, mostly by the deposit for the shopping cart (nobody has to return them, one employee less) and by selling plastic bags (no free bags, and you pack yourself). The system is simple but works well. Plus: the non-brand stuff is actually brand-stuff! In Germany you can even buy a book which lists the no name brand and its real brand. E.g. the facial cream sold in German Aldi stores is mostly Nivea. The big brands always produce too much stuff, so they sell stuff to the discounter stores who sell it in their own names. So you'll get a low price and high quality, only that you have a not so nice packaging. I think that's okay with me! :)

Walmart in Germany btw was totally different than here. It was expensive, dirty and so far out off city limits. The competition with the strongly discounter dominated German stores was really hard. Still in America I think Walmart is expensive, but the profit for groceries in German supermarkets is 2%, the average in the USA is 5% - so of course Walmart either had to give up or to get used to lower profits. That's why I think food is soooo expensive here - people are just used to pay more for the same stuff here. On the other hand side clothing is extremely cheap in the US and way more expensive in Germany.

I am so happy that there is Aldi in NC - finally less than 3 bucks for Cornflakes!!!!

Please allow me to chime in here - no, that is not quite how it works. Suppliers for chains like Aldi have contracts to deliver the same products in so called "Eigenmarken-Verpackung" (which means packaging of Aldi, for example). The supplier has to produce and print that packaging according to the guidelines of (for example) Aldi. None of the big chains in Germany buys surplus stuff from somewhere and goes to the length of packing it themselves. That is all done by the supplier.

Been there afew times

I Had friends that were US Army stationed at Darmstadt-they lived on the base and --in "Lincoln Village" ( I think that was the name--) anyway-Out on the economy never I "clubbed it" much apart from this fairly large pub in Darmstadt centre-can't remember the name right now-but they had the best Heffeweissen and when they served food-the best chicken-YUM! Oh and of course Oktoberfest!

Not much seemed to happen on Rhein Main; the club there was a joke-Either way-I prefered to sight see and get back to the UK as often as possible while I was there.

I made some great German friends that I still keep in touch with that live in Langen-just outside the gates of Rhein Main and a town called Babenhausen nearby.

I thought the German people were great....And they make great Goulash!!!! :P

WOW! Thinking about it all-it WAS a long time ago

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I hate WAL MART. I hated it in Germany because it was too far, dirty and people there thought they spice it up by changing up the aisles every months so you always needed a map to find your way around. I also hate it here, cause it ususally is a clusterf*#@ and people push you around. I went in there with my cart once and left it at the shampoo aisle to go and grab some facial tissues and when I came back I had a little kid sitting in my cart #######....Her dad was like "Ohhh, I guess that is someone elses cart." Too friggin hard, it takes forever the people at the pharmacy don't have a clue. Maybe that is just the case here in Jacksonville. I am still trying to convince my husband to go to the nearest ALDI with me, just because I wanna see what they offer but unfortunately it is about 50 Miles away :crying:
