MIL told me a story about a young South African woman in Florida who applied for a scholarship at one of the Universities. Apparently she was awarded it and when they saw her ... well, you know the rest. Apparently, they could not take it away from her because technically she qualified as African American.

Is this an urban myth, I wonder?

Maybe this happened awhile back. Most applications now make a clear distinction of what they mean ....Black (African-American). The purpose is not to catalogue nationalities (Irish, German, Italian, for example), but to determine if someone is a minority.

So if someone moves here from Haiti they can apply for the scholarship, even though they're not African-American, just black and thereby a minority?

It would depend on the institution that is awarding the scholarship. The award process goes way beyond someone merely filling out an application, as anyone who has applied for one knows.

Black minorities have historically been subjected to discrimination based on their skin color in this country.

Historically, we didn't have indoor plumbing, but that doesn't mean jack today. ;)

Comparing racial discrimination to lack of plumbing is pretty funny, in a ridiculous sort of way.

Then you missed the point completely

Nonono, Charles...don't you get it? We can be an evolved nation and have black pres, but at the same time, be apologists and be discriminatory towards whites because of what happened before any of us were born.

So historically, they haven't been subject to discrimination, because of finally electing someone who is part African American? Is that what your picture is supposed to mean?

blacks playing the we were "discriminated against" card and deserve special treatment have an expiration date?

Blacks continue to be discriminated against because of the color of their skin. I don't why you'd want to remove the historical context of that. Are you looking forward to a date when the Holocaust will be forgotten? Or how the Native Americans were dealt with? Does history ever matter?

History matters of course, I would like to see some expiry date on "excuses" though, it's a little ridiculously out of hand imo.

i just find it amusing how people beat their drums about AA, even though we have an AA president, yet ignore the real and very current discrimination that occurs with our native americans.
