Change of Address for a Student

Hi Everyone:

I will be submitting the N-400 for my daughter (she was a K-2) later this year, and I'm wondering if there will be a problem regarding address changes.

Here's the situation:

Ever since she came to the U.S. in 2005 with her K-2 visa, she has used our address as her permanent address. She lived with us physically for the first 2 years after she came here and attended college, and then moved to another city to finish college. She has lived at 3 different addresses while attending college, but our address is still her permanent address because none of the apartments or college campus dorm rooms were ever going to be permanent.

Will there be a problem because I did not submit a change of address for her every time she moved since leaving our home to finish college?

No - that should not be a problem.

Does she have a driver's license? If yes, then I hope it is in your state and your address.

The address change is important because if they try to contact you, they will use the address on their record, and if the letter doesn't reach her, she can end up in trouble. As long as you receive her mail from Immigration and inform her, then I don't see it as a major problem.

As you said - her permanent address is your address and not the dorm address.

Just reminder her than when she files any documents to USCIS, she needs to keep her address your and not her current.

Is her college in a different state? or how far is it?

If the OP has a problem with this, so do we, always used our home address as our daughters permanent address, been that way in the USA all my life, even when I or my brothers that I was guardian of were in the military. Our health insurance company and the DMV recognizes our home address as our daughters permanent address. With these short overpriced semesters, she would be changing that address ever five minutes.

But the key question is what does the USCIS want? Have yet to find their definition on this subject, so just assume it's like everyone else. Sure wouldn't want any important documents sent to her university address, they use students for mail delivery. Send her a check a couple of weeks ago, she never received it, so had to drive over and hand it to her, as usual, she was dead broke with an empty gas tank. Debated on spending 25 bucks for stop payment, man these banks are getting greedy, just let it go. If someone cashes that check made out to her, might even catch the culprit.

I'm pretty sure it will be alright, but I definitely don't want any issues to screw up her Naturalization application later this year.

I'm just going to make sure that when she renews her Driver's License, that she puts our address on it. She can always change it after she is finished with college AND the immigration process.
